Hello,
I'm new here and am having trouble with my '88 F-150.
The ignition switch has lost the spring back from the start position. I took the steering wheel off and turn signal switch out to see what's happening. I noticed that there is a lot of play where the igniton rod connects to the actuator. I also noticed that the shaft from the key release is broken and there is a spring just hanging there. I can't find anything about this in the shop manual. Does this broken shaft have anything to do with the slop in the ignition rod? How do I replace it? Thanks,
Mike B

Take a look at these links to other posts. I think most all of this is covered. Sounds like you may be talking about a broken lower actuator. Its very common. Be sure and follow all the links in each post. Some of the links may take you to the same post in these two. If you have other questions just post back.
Thanks for the reply. I took a digital picture of my column that's torn apart to my local Ford dealer. He pulled up the parts diagram, and found that what I needed was in fact the actuator, P/N E9TZ-3E715-B. I got it installed, just need to put the wheel back on. This is the first time I had gone this far into the column, and find it's a good wothwhile experience. Good think I have my 2 T-birds to drive in the mean time.
Glad you got it repaired. When I did mine I couldn't find anyone who had actually done it, so I had to just muddle thru. Dealer wouldn't give me any tips and they wouldn't work on it after I had been in to it. So now I help anyone I can, because I know its a fairly expensive repair at the dealer. Keep postin'. We all have knowledge to share.
Lots of good info on this site. Saved me from buying an e4od tranny and a bunch of other stuff.
Cause of this site, I'll stick with Fords for a long time to come....
Those dodge sites are too cumbersome to use.
