i have a 77 f250 4x4 with a 400 with 4:56 rearends i have to do some thing about the gas milage i was thinking of putting in a 6sp. manual tranns.is it possible? or should i just go with an overdrive?
I'm guessing you probably either have a C6 auto or a 4-speed manual with the granny low first gear and direct 4th gear. An overdrive gear is what you need, unless you want to change the axle gears to a higher (numerically lower) ratio or swap to taller tires.
For overdrive trans swaps, if you have a manual trans in it now, a ZF 5-speed from an 80s-'97 truck would be a possible choice. It has a hydraulic clutch though. An NV4500 5speed from a Dodge truck is also a possiblility (with an adapter for the Ford bellhousing and another adaptor for the transfer case). There are other overdrive manual trannies out there, but those are the two that will stand up to use in a heavy 4x4 with a built motor. Another possibility is a Ranger aux overdrive trans that goes between the bellhousing and the existing 4-speed tranny. Check it out at www.advanceadapters.com.
For autos, a well-built AOD would be a choice, easier than an E4OD because of the electronics required with that one. Another choice is an auxiliary overdrive unit on the back of the C6, like a gear vendors or us gear. Niether one are cheap. Check them out at www.gearvendors.com and www.usgear.com.
I beg to differ about the ZF- 5 spd if you want to use your truck off road do not use that piece of junk. The NV500 is a good trany though it has a seperate bellhousing and it is cast rather then aluminum. The ZF is a good tranny if all you do is drive to work and on the highway. Believe me on the ZF part I have towed many a truck out of the woods that has blown a big hole in the side of the ZF or snapped the bellhousing off. I also used to work at an equipment rental place for about 7 months while I lived in seattle and in that time I replaced at least 8 ZF trannys.
