I have a 99 F150 with the 4.2 eng and auto trans. This truck has the factory 6000lb towing pkg,and I use it occasionally to tow my 20 ft boat (about 4000lb).
Got in the truck this morning to go to work, and the OD light started flashing. I thought maybe it was something to do with being cold but on down the road after it warmed up, it was till flashing. I stopped and checked the fluid (in PARK with eng running). Fluid level was normal and no burned smell. The truck seemed to drive OK but was "clunking" some.
I've checked the manual and it has nothing in it about this.
The truck has 82000 on the clock and the tranny was serviced around 60000.
Anyone have any ideas???
I went to the Auto Skills Shop here at Ft Benning, and they ran the scanner on it. Of course when I drove over there, it was doing everything right. Well, the code was 2-3 upshift.
Guy at the auto center said if the light comes on again, bring it back and we'll rescan to see if it's the same thing. It was no charge which was nice.
My wife has a lady friend who's son works at a Ford Dealership as an auto trans tech. I'm gonna check with him to see what's going on.
I have a 1999 F-350 with overdive. My od light started flashing also. The problem with mine was the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor). Mine is located on the top of the rear axle. Maybe that will help you a little.
Well, I went to Aamco today, and found that the transmission is going bad, or at least that's what they told me. They want $1200 to rebuild the tranny.
Said that the fluid was brownish and going bad, but I still want a second opinion before I let them do anything.
I just went through the same thing on my 94 F350 Turbo diesel. Not sure if you have the same trans. My symptons were O/D lite flashing, long time between shifts, shifts and will give you whip lash. Went through a lot of diagnostics (look up pre power stroke, O/D lite flashes) finally replaced the rear end speed sensor (procedure in the same forum) works like a charm.
Well, the truck is at the transmission doctor getting a rebuild. Talked to some friends and got 2 opinions on this one guy so I took it to him. Transmission is bad, and has to be rebuilt. Gonna run around $1300.
