Cleaning engine accessories

When cleaning engine parts like alternator, starter etc. what's the best way to spruce them up. Anybody take them apart or just mask them and paint as is?

I've seen people just spray them and go on with life, but I dont think thats very good for an alt., starter it wouldn't really mater. I took my air angle grinder with a scotch pad on it and cleaned ut the alt. and it looks fairly good.

You can just spray (water) the altenator AS LONG AS IT IS COMPLETELY dry before putting it back on. It won't hurt the windings at all. If they are still wet, then you put it on and use it, you could short the stator out.

It's just as easy to remove the gut, clean as usual then paint and put it together.

As far as cleaning I was thinking as much about parts that have some rust on them. The alternator being aluminum (or alloy) won't be rusty but will be tarnished etc.. The starter had some rust on it and the power steering pump also had rust and flaky paint. I think I will just use a scotch pad and touch them up.

Using a scotch pad should do the trick...
