I have a 72 ford f-100,with manual steering. There is a part that connects to the spline sticking out of the front of the gear box,and is also part of the coupling to the steering shaft.Mine is stripped and will not grip the spline on the gear box, so my steering wheel just spins, can,t drive the truck. Where can I get another part, I have tried but cannot find one. Will the coupling from a 68 ford fit?or anything else? This is my only transportation,so i need to get it back on the road. Next question for anyone that knows. Can i put power steering in this truck and how hard is it? I am 67 years old, so i need to keep it simple. Thanks, all
Having installed pwr steering on my '72 a few months ago, I can tell you it took all day for two guys. Some cutting, welding, drilling. But well worth it for sure. As far as your steering shaft, you could get an aftermarket shaft that fits between box and shaft coupler. Check some of the aftermarket catalogs. Borgeson (sp)? comes to mind as one co that makes them.
Well, my power steer install entailed, cutting out a section of the inside of the frame, welding extra support brackets, drilling extra hole for bolts on steer box. My manual box was on outside of frame, new box installed on inside of frame. Just followed directions that came with the parts. Steering shaft had to be shortened, and drag link had to be shortened. Also radiator had to be removed, also relocated bracket for steering dampener to different spot on crossmember due to shortened link. I'm sure there are a hundred ways to get power steering on a truck, but this was the way I was told to do it. So I did it that way, and it came out fine and it looks good.
