I need alittle help please. I recently bought a 96 Taurus for my wife that according to the odometer has 72K on it. The car was accuired by a local tranny shop because of non payment on a trans rebuild. When we went to get a replacement title for it it came back that the car supposedly has over 138K on it. The car is straight and clean(for a 96) and the engine doesn't look like it's been pulled except for what was needed to get the the transaxle out. Is there a place on the motor that has a set of numbers that I can match to the VIN to see what's up? It's got a 3.0 Vulcan in it.
There is an engine ID label which should be located on a valve cover. The label contains the engine calibration number, build date, plant code and some other info.
Not sure if you are aware that there was an Owner Notification Program (ONP) for the '96-'99 Taurus/Sable with 3.0L Vulcan engine. Has to do with a problem known as "brown coolant", a cooling system issue that can do some serious harm if not addressed. Since the fix is not really that hard to carry out (there is a kit), and since the damage the brown coolant can cause an engine is so great, I figured I should mention it. Most Generation III Taurus/Sables have already been serviced and have the kit installed, but you never know.
Thanks for the info Rockledge. I wasn't aware of the TBS on the coolant problem. This one is nice and green, but I'll keep a close eye on it. Is the label your'e talking about a white paper one on the end of the valve cover or is it something else?
