I was out taking our 75 F-100 (360 2x2) for a little exercise and I noticed the temp gauge was all the way up to the P on the lettering of temp. So it was 3/4-4/5 of the way across the normal range. Still going to check the antifreeze level since I do have leak . But I was wondering if the thing is even accurate. Heck are any of the gauges going to be accurate?
My 84 does the same thing with both the temp guage and oil pressure guage. When my temp guage reads on the hot side my oil pressure goes up. And when it reads cool, the oil pressure goes down. It runs fantasticThat doesn't add up if you ask me, because a cooler running engine gets more oil pressure. I don't like the idea of altering my original interior and dash, but I am thinking of installing a triple guage set so I know what the hecks goin on under the hood
fatherdoug is partly correct. The IPVR is OK but has lost it's ground connection. There are many threads here on this repair and how to clean up the flex circuit and gages so I won't go into it here.
The white plastic gauge backs have crumbled many times. You can find replacements at the junkyard. There are differences in the connector and bulb placement so get the right back. Check to see if the plastic is soft and starting to crumble. I have no idea if the crumbling plastic can be traced to a specific year, manufacturer, or lot.
I'm wondering if the crumeling is due to what part of the country a person is from and what the weather is like where they are. I have a few guage sets in the garage and have seen several at the local bone yards. I have never seen one that was crumbeling a part, but i see people on here talk about the problem frequently. I'm from Texas. Where are the crumbeling guage panel folks from?
As far as the guages being accurate: My 73 is a daily driver and sees about 700 miles a month and I've never had a problem with mine. My engine did get hot 1 time and the guages told me so right away. Also had a problem with my oil pump 1 time and guages worked fine.

drop a thermometer in the radiator it will read within 10 degrees of engine temp first find out what it is doing maybe your fixing something thats not broke? one of my trucks with a 195 reads the end of the m the other the needle rides between E and M they both have the same stat and read 186 at the top of the radiator
I would suggest finding someone with a handheld infrared temp reader to see what your engine is current at. I had a temp sender that was reading at about 1/4 when completely warm. So I replaced it with a aftermarket part and it read at full. Started to panic since I had replaced the thermostat at the same time, but a shop read the temp right on the sensor and it was at 172. So a trip to Ford for a third sensor put full warm at 2/3, perfect. So if you know a few reference points, and it seems to smoothly move...
Of course I completely ignore my battery guage since its dead. And my fuel gage works pretty slowly above half and then speeds up below, and is out at 1/8. Not quite sure about my oil gage, but my best guess is that fully warm only looses about 1/3 of the pressure.
I found on my 78 that if you remove the push on connector at the temp sensor and crimp on a normal ring wire connector and then use a nut to hold it down you will at least have a steady temp reading.
