Need info on transmission swap. Swapping a 5 speed (4 speed w/ OD) from a 1988 ford F150 2wd into a 1978 Ford F100 2WD shortbox with 300 6 cyl. and a three speed transmission. Questions. . .
1. Can this transmission be converted to manual throughout bearing or what slave cylinder can be used with the current hydraulic throughout bearing?
2. Will I need a new starter with this transmission (are the flywheels the same between the 3 speed and the 5 speed?)
3. Output splines are the same on both transmission but will I have to shorten the drive shaft, if so how much?
4. What modifications need to be done to the cross member or can I use a cross member from a 88' F150?
5. Any other items needed to complete this swap would be apreciated.
The pickup 5 spd trans has a one piece case, so you would need to use the hydrolic clutch and switch the pickup over to that style - which has been done. Or I've heard you can use your bellhousing and manual linkages with a older mustang 5 spd. Do a search of this forum and the 300-I6 forum. You will come up with lots of info.
