My Dad has a 1994 F-150 4x4 with a 5.0L and it is A4OD. When the truck is first started, it idles up like normal and then after a few seconds it starts to idle up and down. If I pull the truck into drive or reverse quickly and hold my foot on the brake for about 15 seconds and then put it in park it will idle fine most of the time but it has went back to the idle up and down. If you don't get it into gear quick enough then it idles up and down and then dies fairly quickly. When the truck is warm however, it doesn't seem to do it. Also, going down the road, the truck runs fine. It doesn't miss or run rough or anything. It only does it when the truck has set and cooled down. Does anyone have any suggestions or has this happened to anyone and they could give me a little direction on what to check?
Didn't really expect to see it if it just started and hasn't fouled out something yet. YOu may have some stored codes though, they would be worth checking.
I took the valve off and cleaned it as best as i could. It didn't idle up and down when I first started it. The start was a cold start after sitting all last night, however it didn't idle up like it should have untill it was warm either. It ran down the road just fine and also just sitting in gear. I also had to replace the aft-axle gas tank for him this morning. had a seam separating on the rear of the tank. He is going to pick it up this evening after work and I'll check with him and see what it does for the next couple of days. Let me know what you think about the "slow idle". Thanks Again
Still have the slow idle problem and now when it idles down the voltage guage drops and if the lights are on they dim but only if it is in gear. Other than that, the truck doesn't miss or hesitate when you pull out in it and is fine going down the road. I'm going to check for stored codes next and will let you know what I find.
Tex, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Replaced IAC this evening and wouldn't you know it, the truck ran just like a Ford is supposed to. This site and it's members are AWESOME!! and it helps out us part-time mechanics who can't afford to take a vehicle to the dealer for repairs. Thanks again for the help!!
