02 tube question

02 tube question
I have a 1995 F250 4x4 351w with ford motorsports headers and a dual in/out cat.
My 02 sensor is mounted on the cat. The cat is rusting out so I need to know if the 02 sensor has to read from both sides of the motor or if I can just weld a bung on one pipe and run it that way.
I ask this because on a stock system there is a small crossover tube that the 02 reads from.
I woud just as soon toss the cat as we have no testing were I live.
I spend alot of time parked in tall grass and brush and don't want to start a fire.
