I have a 2000 Explorer XLT. I seem to be leaking Antifreeze. The leak is very small. I lose about less than half a gallon of Antifreeze in 7 days or 200 - 250 miles of stop and go traffic. I live in NY, so the weather has been between 20 & 40 all this week. I can't find a leak any where near the radiator or any hoses visible. The exhaust is not cloudy white or have an antifreeze smell to it.
Today, my dad and I find some antifreeze residue near where the transmission meets the engine. I hope I don't have a crack in my engine block. Can anyone give this NY boy a suggestion what I should look at. Any information would be awesome.
Check between the engine and the firewall; it could be coming from the back of one of the heads (hopefully not). Also, check the heater core plumbing. Good luck!
Take a close look at the heater control valve. This is an all plastic valve mounted in line with the small hoses running from the block to the heater core behind the firewall. There is a vacuum diaphragm on one side that pulls on a metal bellcrank to either send coolant through the heater core or bypass it back to the engine.
The valve tends to go bad and allow antifreeze to seep around the the bellcrank. The end result is a slow loss of coolant. The coolant drips down on the passenger side near the back of the engine.
Warm up the engine, put the heater control in "defrost" and in "off", and look for any signs of fluid getting past the rod. It's an $18.00 part and can be changed out in 15 minutes.
