Man that worm stuff is FREAKY!! I`ve seen ticks on my dog, but never seen worms growing out of anything alive!! Kudo`s to the man that pulled it off and then gave it a modeling career photo shoot. I believe I would`ve just thrown the whole mouse away( with the worm). Man that`s sick.

Those things will live pretty much anywhere there is a summer with any flies. I would be really surprised if there aren't any in even Alaska. I live in MN and it's pretty cold here during the winter (20-30 below 0 F at times) and they winter just fine. I never saw any before I became a vet either so they are not that common, but around.
Cool. I filled up a Dixie cup with damp dirt and dropped it in; see what happens. I have my doubts; however, since Vic (Victor mouse trap) ended the host's life maybe a little too soon? I am thinking now that maybe the mouse couldn't stand the pain and comitted suicide. It was facing away from the bait as if he tripped it with his tail.
I will keep you all posted if anything develops.
AKFord: I think you are right...I have too much time on my hands to be killing mice and hatching flies.
Yeah, well, if you guys think the botfly larva is bad, you should see the screw worm. That thing will eat you alive. It used to kill good size steer in a few days by eating a hole in the side of it. They used to cause $100 million per year in losses in the 40's and 50's.
They 'think' they have it eradicated in the US now, but to keep it waaay down south, they have these factories in central america that pump out sterile flys to keep them from reproducing. God forbid that thing ever come back here!
