After driving for a while the oil light in my 1981 F-150, with 60000 kms on it, begins to flicker when stopped at a stop light or when then engine is in reverse or drive and the brake is on. The engine does not burn any oil and there does not appear to be any noise in the engine. The engine seems to be very under powered but according to a few messages on this board the stock 302 is not known for its power. But I can live with it. Only if I could lower my mpgs.
Any help would be appreciated.
Even considering selling my truck and buying a Toyota. God forbid.
Here's an old trick. Remove one of your valve covers and slightly rev the engine. Don't run the engine up too high unless you like wearing oil. If you can see a little oil flowing from the journals then your pump is probably OK. If not, SHUT IT OFF. You probably just have a bad sending unit or a gunked up passage. Change the sending unit and do an oil change with a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil ( the stuff really works ). Do another oil change (no additive) after about 500 miles. Good luck - CHRIS
you can find it at most any auto parts store. my friends dad owns the NAPA in my home town and he swears by the stuff. i bought an old rattly 460 and put it in with every other oil change and the thing runs like a top!! good product. hope that helps, good luck!!!
Marvel Mystery Oil is good stuff, quites down lifters and helps old engines that need leaded gas.302's do lose oil pressure while still running strong. Oil pump and rod bearings will bring it back up. Just a pain to remove pump with limited clearance for hand with oil pan down and engine raised up a little.
