I have a 68 F100 Ranger 4x2 with manual overdrive. The overdrive cable is hanging up. If I squirt wd-40 down the cable tube and work it back and forth it will move, but still tight. After a couple days it will jam up again. I don't think the cable can be pulled completely out of the tube. Any tricks to lube this cable up so it will move smoothly? Thanks.
Not sure, but you could try a graphite lubricant.
My dad's old 65 had this in it. We just left it engaged. Worked great. We could use all of the gears, and it wouldn't go into OD until after 35. When we lifted our foot off of the throttle slightly, it would go into OD. If we floored it, it would come out of OD.
The problem with leaving it engaged is that the transmission will not hold the vehicle when parking. If the overdrive is engaged the vehicle will roll despite being in gear. So, not really an option.
I have used Napa chain and cable lube on throttle cables with good results. It's a foaming lube, and can get way down the cable and soak in to provide long term lube.
