The Rating System
Russ Wardle
Consider one thing... if ratings aren't important than why do schools grades students, including their conduct? If you have problems with a specific rating, let me know and I'll try to address it.
In fact, I haven't read such trash since the seventies...
I saw no point in all of that rubbish, but it did seem to me that it was someone looking to try a new place on the web they had found.
In all honesty I would classify it as a spam posting.
If the above comes back again, do us a HUGE favor and write what you wanted to say in simple ENGLISH. Never use twenty dollar phrases to express a ten cent idea.
And if you can't hold to such an admittedly basic (but effective) ideal -
Get lost!
I refuse to apologise for my stance on this before you even begin to refute it, because I am not in the least impressed by your scattered verbiage.....
GET REAL!
>of the human condition. You don't know what I look like. I
>have removed all preconceived thoughts from you. I have to
>offer only my thoughts. I speak using words as best I can.
>You will know me by my knowledge. However, it is of little
>value if you can not understand what I am trying to say. I
>look past this burp and learn from what you have to say by
>listening and questioning . I do the same when I'm talking

>SYSTEM. In the message board I can RATE people. I can take
>control of their destiny with my opinions on their thoughts.
>If you don't get this then think about this. I'm a teacher.
>How would you like me to start dehumanizing your kids based
>on their abilities? To classify them as worthless and then
>go into the staff room and tell all my colleagues how
>worthless your kid is.
Uh, excuse me but last time I checked rating students is exactly what teachers do. That's what grades are...ratings, more specifically they are ratings of the students' abilities based on testing of their knowledge on specific subjects. Whether or not they're "dehumanizing" is up for debate but the fact is that from the moment of birth (ever hear of APGAR scores) until we die we get rated. Some ratings are much more subjective than others but the fact is that in school, at work, at home throughout every phase of our life we are subject to the opinions of everyone we meet and some we'll never meet. Each of us chooses whether or not to make it important to us. If you don't like the rating system on the board then don't use it. It certainly doesn't carry the type of weight you ascribe to it..."control of their destiny"...I hardly think so.

Ok... I don`t usually jump in on this stuff but...
My wife has been teaching grade school for 33 yrs.
I really doubt your a teacher! Teachers say things in the staff room that you would never put in print, Like why cant we get a school counselor to spend the day in the room instead of 15 min for problem kids. Why cant the parents show up twice a year for open house!
Why does the school district re furbish the offices for them selves when the kids dont have reading program books...
Yes teachers do use a rateing system and i know it works...

Babbling on the net isn't a point getter....
I may have been harsh, I admit that.
Maybe it was someone that got sick of being prevented from doing what used to be available to correct bad influences from ruining a class -
I suppose I'll never know.
But there IS ONE criteria for learning that I know well:
In order for any student to learn what you have to offer -
You have to make the student WANT what you have to give them.
I should know.
I am a United States NAVY instructor.
And that is probably why it made me so disgusted to see that post
Someone doubted my credentials as a teacher. I can't prove anything short of giving you my phone number at work so you can speak to administration. What I can say is I am lucky to be able to attend speaker sessions on new methods of assessment, teaching styles (pedigogy), and motivation techniques (I work at a high needs school). The rating system says 50% is acceptable (note: actually it's around 45%. Anything at 45 to 49 is considered a pass
i.e., 50%. One of the dirty little secrets we don't put in print). Does this mean we should accept the rating system, just because it was done in the past and therfore we should continue?
P.S. Thank you Ken for letting this topic play through.

I guarantee that knowing 50% of a say eight subjects is better than knowing 100% of ONE subject.
And Yes of course, knowing 90% of eight subjects is better than that yet.
BUT,That's where the averaging comes in.
Besides the students have the rest of their lives to learn more about what it is they will do with the rest of their lives.
Now everyone will be a Brain Surgeon,Teacher,Ditch Digger,or elevator operator.

Where did this come from? What does being a teacher have to do with this? I have great respect for teachers, what they do, and what they have to put up with on a daily basis but...
I feel the need to jump in here! I have volunteered and worked for many schools (for many years). Teachers do talk (especially in the staff rooms!) It is demoralizing and dehumanizing to hear the teachers and staff members talk about students. Very rarely do you hear nice comments about students. Confidentiality is out the door! I would hope that teachers are grading students on their abilities not their "rating" in the staff room! Please...Stick to teaching not preaching!

Where do you live that they have standards so low? Where I live, students must have a 70% average to pass. A 70% is considered D-.
is rather descriptive of your philosophy.
Personally (just my opinion, based on your statement, "I have to
offer only my thoughts")my thought is that you are overly
impressed with your own relative unimportance.
