Everyone needs to step back and cool off before this degrades into personal attacks....

Post The Rating System

I set you up. I had to prove my theory about the rating sysytem. See Greywolfs response to my comments. If people dont understand something they feel uncomfortable and attack. See other peoples comments for added support of my initial statements. The comment I made about me going into the staff room was Greywolf responding to my first posting. Greywolf entered the staffroom and attacked the students i.e. me. I thought you folks would see.
In regards to numbers they are all arbitrary. There are schools that have a "No fail Policy", in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and at my school in Calgary Alberta Canada I personally teach using objective based teaching. This means nobody passes a concept until they understand it, i.e, everyone gets 100%. Thats my motivation Greywolf.

Set who up for what? As near as I can tell you started this discussion by complaining about the ratings system on this board and claiming that somehow people's destinies were tied to it and then went on to try to prove your point with an analogy that was totally inapropriate.

Ah, that explains a lot. I like Canada and the Canadian people, I have a lot of Canadian friends but your government is renowned for it's liberal, "politically correct" social and fiscal policies. Obviously that extends into the education system as well.

Deb I agree with you. You have clarified my point about the rating system. You have seen what I experience at work. And, now have experienced here at this site. If you don't tow the line, keep to a prescribed language then you agitate people. Then, you go online and belittle them. You have experienced this first hand as I have in the last few days. I have "disgusted" people and had my credentials called into question, "I doubt he's even a teacher". This is the rating system as we know it here at fordtrucks.com. Do we really want to dehumanize each other?

The Rating System

IMHO that the rating system put in place here is just a
add-on for letting people know how they feel about them
in either a Positive > Neutral > Negative way.

From a Native Calgarian who like to promote MY City I feel everyone is being Judged on what they did ,what they do,and what they might do.

It's just another EXTRA outlet for either Thanking someone or slandering someone.

On my rating report the ONLY negative was from someone who didn't like someone telling him to NOT rate himself, Go Figure.

And as far as Conformity goes, as long as it doesn't RULE your life, what's the big deal with,Trying to fit in?

What school do you teach at, the Lord Shaughnessy Drop-in Center for goofs ?

To Bill, You're exactly right about the Liebral attitude getting into everything it seems.
But be rest assured, most of us here in Western Canada choke whenever the Liebrals are mentioned. Mis-spelling of *Liberal* intended

Ploitically speaking ,We are more "Of Center" rather than being left or right.

rtwardle:
No we do not need to dehumanize one another. But every now and then someone wants to "stir the pot" and create heated debates. Therefore causing unnecessary "dehumanizing" of ones self. First of all I would have never admitted that you were a teacher, and brought grading/teaching into this post/argument. You should have simply left it as your opinion on this sites "rating" system. You left yourself wide open for comments.
I would sum up the rating system on this site, as basically a "thank you" for being helpful when in need. I personally have never seen a negative rating (I'm sure they exist). I have found that most everyone on this site is conscientious, helpful, empathetic and diverse.
I apologize if I offended or dehumanized by my response. Again I can appreciate and respect how hard it is to be in your position!

Thanks
Deb

rtwardle,
I agree with Deb's post.
Your topic was thought provoking, but you put it 'off topic' by using the 'teacher' analogy.
BTW, I gave you a user rating.
How do you feel about that now?

FWIW: I have not given out any user ratings prior. And I have not received any either. So we reap the crop we sow.

Scott

The Rating System

Horsepuller you are the one who got it. My whole purpose was to put forth a thought provoking topic in a general discussions area on "ratings". I used the teacher analogy to draw a parallel between what happens here as a result of rating someone else (or could) and what actually happens around the schools across America. I knew I had to show people what would happen using the rating system rather than just complain about it. Hence the $20 speech and "psychobable" as someone put it. An effective way to engage someone is to hit their emotions. I took advantage of this. We saw what happened as the result of my first posting. People came into this forum just like teachers walking into a staffroom and got upset. And thats when the ratings about me started. My hidden curriculum was to show that you can set preconceived emotions (and opinions of course) into other peoples heads. I think it's safe to say that you all jumped on the band wagon together. You were all in the same camp about how you felt in regards to the first post I made.
The teacher thing upset people the most I think. It's not enjoyable to think about teachers going into a staff room and belittling kids. I see it at my school. The staff is part of the old guard. Some have been at the school for 25 years. For a teacher I think thats unhealthy for the kids and bad for professional development. I plan on leaving at the end of the year (2002). I can't be around people that treat kids that way. Thats why I was motivated to pursue the ratings option here at Fordtrucks.com I hate rating students. My students are street urchens, prostitutes, and drug addicts. There fathers have beat them and they have been through 6-7 schools by the time they get to us. And, they are only in grade 11 at this point. Fifty percent of my social studies class were ward of the state, i.e., they lived in a group home. These people don't respond to negative people(they have had it all their lives). They take it personally, very personally I found out. I spent alot of time trying to find ways around assessing others and I discouvered objective based teaching. I only accept the best. That's 100%. If the student doesn't understand then I continue the lesson untill they do. These kids have been put down all there lives. Rating them sets them up for failure. They need successes in their lives not failures. My motivation to discuss this topic came from my students. I loose too many kids to negativity.
I look at the clock and it's 10:17 here in Calgary. My girlfriend has gone down to listen to some country music (Tom Philips and The Men of Constant Sorrow). Best country in Calgary. I'm heading down to join her. So to all at Fordtrucks.com have a happy new year.
