That is the quandry I will be facing this spring. Would you plan it as a many-day trip with lots of stops to maximize those hot/cold/hot cycles? Or could you just try to be frequently varying your speed on the highway home?

I'm trying to plan the same trip to pick up my ordered truck. My problem is I need to complete the 800 mile round trip in twelve hours, including dropping off a rental car and completing the sales transaction. Whew!
I just don't see how to spend time on secondary roads where varied driving conditions would be more advantageous for break-in. Stopping long enough for the engine block to cool appreciably also doesn't seem to be in the cards.
Anyway that's my quandry, I still don't have a final plan.

Thanks for spending the time to provide such detailed and informative posts, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Fred , thanks for those posts. I am a millwright by trade which is just an industrial mechanic. we are always using heat and cold for interference fits on bearings and hubs and everything you say about engine break in, I agree with totally. I only have 300 miles on mine mostly short trips. Boy when you shut the V10 down she sure talks to you while she cools. These are awesome motors and now my 02 Honda Accord feels like the loud vehicle. When I drove that Honda after driving my 04 PSD it felt so smooth and quiet. After the V10 the Honda feels noisy and not that solid. Thanks again for the great posts. Wrenchtraveller.

Thumbs up

and i thought i knew a lot of mechanics stuff , guess its to many years of german made,
for those going up to jeff or planning to, please check the new buyers section jeff has listed the factory cut off dates for the 05's. early march i think he posted. please look it up if planning, or ask jeff with a pm or email

for those going up!how about taking a shuttle flight up to rochester. jeff is known to pick his people up at the air port[from posts] when he has notice, ask him! don't trust my old brain. seems like jet blue or continantal express go there, again ASK JEFF he is on top of it all and he did advise me on doing so. rental cars and mileage charges many possibly be almost the same amount plus you will not be as worn out. 5 or 6 driving 1 flying, talk with jeff and play safe.

coming home you can take 90 east to albany and 87 south to route 17 in nj, both are the ny t. way. or take 390 south to corning stop and see the corning glass museum,[suggestion only its nice to see, cool down time] then 17 south to the tway or to route 94 south[around middletown] into vernon then 515 south [at the only light in vernon] to route 23 south to 287 or 80 or 46 east to 3 east to the parkway, this route will take much longer but gives you many chances to pull off, stop, veiw ,eat or what ever.

good luck to every one, shinny side up on any trips

captchas,
Continental's schedule out of Newark sucks, Jet Blue means fighting uncertain rush-hour traffic. With taxi, security and other airport niceties, there is only an hour advantage to flying.
Thanks for some of the driving route suggestions, northern 23 would be a real gas in the v10! (hilly, curvy, fast, fun)

If you truely can't do the heat cycle thing, at least get it on the high-way and keep the speed going up and down, see how many people you can p!ss off on the way home, don't worry about using fuel, just run it up in speed and bring it back down some, roll into it a little on some hills, if you arn't going to fast kick it down a gear, just do everything you can to keep the rpm at differn't levels, also always keep that engine under a differn't load, trying not to let completly off the gas. It won't be the end of the world, it's not like your going to use 3 quarts of oil per change, it is just a little better if you have the time to (properly) break it in. I am ****, so my truck will be perfectly broken in, I know lots of people that hop into them and go like he!!, I know a guy that did perfect Mobil 1 oil changes and the motor blew at 30,000 miles, I know others that went 30,000 miles without ever tuching the motor (morons) and the motor lasted 300,000+ miles, it just goes to show.... Do what you can, if you got to get home, you got to get home you know?!

Thanks for all the great break-in information. I ordered a 2005 F-250, V-10, crew-cab, 4X4, 4.30 LS, short bed, 5 speed Torque-shift, last week. I am also happy to hear that another person got delivery very quickly, as I am excited about getting mine. I have printed out the break-in advise and will take it with me to the dealership. I will be about 60 to 70 miles from home for pickup at the dealer. I already have this trip im my mind and look forward to it. I too bought this truck for retirement, in a few years. Nothing is wrong with my current truck, except I needed to plan for the future with this new ride. I look forward to many years with the new truck. I have had my current truck 14 years. Good luck to you all.

Well, mine's on the way also, delivery date 2/15-from ford. I'm hoping that mine shows up early like yours, Captchas, so that I can take delivery before Jeff's vacation.
