Hi all I was wondering if any body could tell me what the silver thing to the right of my fuel fiter, fuel pump?. FPR? mine is leaking, from the valve on the right. so can i just fix the seal or do i need to repalce the whole thing? plus how do I tell if my fuel pump is bad, thanks to all you folk are alwasy so helpful j
Thats your fpr. I don't exactly uderstand where your leaking. For the pump........using the schrader valve that right under the sensor on the fpr check pressure with a tire gauge. (thats the easiest, but hold a rag around it as you'll lose a little diesel) at idle. You should be around 50 lbs stock. Many people will "shim the fpr" to up the pressure to around 70 lbs which is supposed to the optimal.
Is it leaking from the thing that looks like a sensor? The thing with the wires attached? Mine was leaking a couple of months ago a I replaced it, quick fix. Just the small round thing to the right. Dealer item. I think it was about $30, but not sure.

Mine was leaking from the same sensor , yeah ....Easy fix .
Yeah that would be where it' leaking from . on the right where the blake wire attaches. so I can get the part from ford only? or can i get it at a napa / internatonal or any of the parts stores? what part did you guys ask for?

It should be available from Intenational or NAPA for less money , also might want to call some of the discount auto part stores too .
Oh heah,, and I would think if I dont have pressuer of 50 psi at idle my fuel pump is shot . right or wrong? thanks J
Not always..............They came stock at about 40-50lbs But its been found that they run a bit better around 70lbs. I would also think that the spring in the fpr can get weak causing the pressure to drop off. I would think that if you shim your regulator and still can't build pressure, that your pump is bad.
I just realized that my truck is leaking from the same sensor and not my fuel pump as I first thought. What is the name of that sensor? Is it a fuel pressure sensor?
The repair manual and the online manual both show different setups than my '97 has so I've had no luck coming up with its name.
I got mine at ford. internationl did not have then due to a different FPR.
I dont have the part # here but if you one it I can get it for you my recipte with the # is at the office. At ford they called it a SWITCH. I belive the fuel pressuer regulator switch. but I just went in a described what it was and the knew right off the bat what I was talking about. good luck. J
Thanks, but I had a brain drizzle. I printed out the picture above and took it with me to the stealership. I paid close to $50 for it which seems a bit like robbery. Also, I think I could have gotten by with just taking out the old one and putting some teflon tape on the threads and re-installing. It didn't appear to be leaking from the part itself as I had assumed. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that until I took the new one out of the package and put on teflon tape to have it ready in case fuel spewed out when I removed the old one. Oh well, It's all worth it in the end if this actually stops the leak!!!!!

I think I paid $40 something for mine , so $50 isn't too bad .
You really don't even need it if you change your fuel filter and drain your bowl regularly. You can pull the sensor out and replace it with a 1/8" mpt plug. Mine has been disconnected for about 6 months.
How much would you need to shim to get that psi bump? I've not checked mine yet, but will likely on my next days off. What benefits does this give you? Just runs better? I guess that's reason enough.
