I just recently got a prescription for glasses, and sadly, the ones I want are on sale for $330. I have been looking around online, and I seem to have found a site that will confirm your prescription with your doctor, AND these glasses will only be $170 or so!!! I'm kind of wary of purchasing things like this over the internet though, so I was wondering if anybody had done business of this nature online before? ALso, they have two "sizes" of these frames... is there any way I can measure that for myself? I think the doctor did take some measurements of that sort, but I'm not totally sure. It's such a great-sounding deal... but I just don't want to end up regretting it... especially if they end up being knock-off frames or something.
I have ordered contact lenses online with nothing but positive results. But contact lenses are prepackaged to the prescription needed. There is no special fitting or adjustments needed.
With glasses, you'll need to get the correct size frame for your head and then it will most likely need minute adjustments to the nose bridge pieces and ear gripping ends. By experience I can tell you that you don't want to make those adjustments with your pliers yourself. If you break 'em you're out of luck. If you buy your frames from a local shop and they break 'em then it's on them to replace the frames at no charge to you. Even if you found the frames online and had your local eyeglass shop adjust them they will not gaurantee them since you did not buy the frames from them. I would personally keep looking at your local shops to compare prices.
FYI, check the back of your local yellow pages book for coupons. Also, if your local shops are nationwide chains sometimes their website will have internet coupons available for printing out and redeeming.
most eyeglass places will do the minor adjustments for free, they will even tell you what size glasses to get if you ask. I just had my eyes checked and will be ordering some eyeglasses online soon.
Yeah, I would have to go with the 'local' glasses shopping too.
There is a part of the fitting process with the frames that involves how far the lenses are going to be from your eyes in relation to the frames chosen, and usually, the lenses are ground accordingly. That's not something that I would care to mess with by ordering online. I really need my glasses to fit and function flawlessly.
Like cigarxtc said, it might best serve you to keep checking for a good deal in your local area, just in case you need repairs, adjustments, whatever.
I just wanted to update this and let you guys know, if you're in the market for some new glasses, that I ordered the glasses online. The total for glasses+frames+shipped 2nd day FedEx was $165. In the store that would have cost me $330! They are the exact same frames, the lenses are correct, and they fit perfectly! I'd do it again, especially since I can afford a second pair (but I'm probably going to buy contacts instead!). They also sell contacts and sunglasses, by the way.
