tedturbo......Welcome to Ford Truck Enthusiasts! If you have a minute check out the Guidelines, it will help you to navigate through and understand FTE.
We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!
Misfiring spark plugs or shorted plug wires can have a tendency to suddenly correct themselves, though this is usually not consistently temperature related.
One possibility is that the engine is running too lean when cold. Perhaps due to low fuel pressure or a vacuum leak (with a MAF equipped truck). When the engine warms up, the computer looks at the oxygen sensor, finds the engine running lean, and adds enough fuel to compensate and that additional fuel makes it run smooth. This is the most likely explanation for smoothing out after warm up "just like a switch".
Another possibility is that the ECT or ACT sensors are indicating "warmed up", even though the truck is cold. The computer does not add fuel for cold engine enrichment, and the engine runs lean/rough until it warms up. In this situation I would expect a slow improvement in idle quality prior to smoothing out "just like a switch".

thanks for the advice im not up on all the sensors for this truck the ect and the act sensors what are they a can they be changed by myself
If this is a diesel ("glow plugs", "tedturbo", "Cam Sensor") then you should say so. You would probably do better in the diesel engine forum than in this forum with us (mostly) gassers.
Otherwise, the IAC is an actuator, not a sensor. It admits a variable amount of air to the engine, under control of the computer, in order to control idle speed and act as a decell dashpot. It is mounted on the throttle body. The ECT and IAT sensors can be changed fairly easily, but you should run some tests to be sure they are implicated rather than wasting your money firing the parts shotgun.
