I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3L in when I start the truck it will start right away and will run for a few seconds and then stall then the only way to start it is to use a gas soaked rag in the air intake then it will start and run. This problem is only if the truck sits without running for a few hours not just in the morning. I have replaced the fuel pump fuel filter and checked the fuel lines for any leaks and have found none. I would like some help if possible I love the truck and just want it to start (and continue to run)on a regular basis.
just checked HPOP resrvoir and it is low. I may be asking a stupid ? but does it need to be full or at 3/4 full and does it use the same oil as the engine. Is it a closed system or does it share oil with engine?
Here are a couple of exerpts from the pinpoint test.
AC3 ATTEMPT TO START ENGINE
Refill high pressure oil pump reservoir.
Attempt to start engine.
Does engine start and then stall after about 15 seconds?
Yes Lubrication system is not supplying enough oil to the high-pressure oil pump
No GO to AC5 . If no other faults are indicated, GO to GO to Pinpoint Test AO .
AC7 CHECK PARAMETER IDENTIFICATIONS (PIDS)
Go to Section 4A or Section 4B, Diagnostic Subroutines, Hard Start/No Start Diagnostics. Perform Steps 9a, 9b, 9c and 9d.
Inspect for "pal" nut on IPR.
Check for restricted screen in reservoir (if equipped).
Check for injector poppet stuck open (visible with valve cover off and cranking engine). With valve cover harness disconnected and engine cranking, no oil should pass through the injectors. If oil does pass through, poppet is leaking.
Is a fault indicated?
AC8 CHECK FUEL PUMP PRESSURE
Go to Section 4A or Section 4B, Diagnostic Subroutines, Hard Start/No Start Diagnostics Procedures. Perform Fuel Pump Pressure Test.
Is Fuel Pressure less than 138 kPa (30 psi) at key on?
Yes Go to Section 4A or Section 4B, Diagnostic Subroutines, Performance Diagnostics, Step 8A-.
