'99 F150 rear diff interchangeability

'99 F150 rear diff interchangeability
So my rear axle started making lots of funny noises the other day. I took it to a tranny shop and they said I probably just need a front & rear pinion bearing and new crush sleeve.
They got in and said everything shows too much wear except for the ring & pinion themselves...quoted me $800 for total rebuild.
I can get a used axle from a junkyard for $700 (same tag as my current axle), and install it myself. The bad news is I don't have seven OR eight hundred bucks for either option. It turns out my tag is one of the most expensive used axles for Ford's...reason being, I assume, is that they're all Junk.
There are like 42 different tag #'s for '99 f150's, and I was wondering if any other tags are interchangeable with mine, and how would I find out? I have an 8.8" with drums, so that limits it to about 10 or 12 rear ends, but that gives me a glimmer of hope.
If anyone has the answer, please let me in on it.
