Ultimate score!!!

I just got off the phone with a gentleman who has NO IDEA what kind of goldmine he's sitting on. I'm going to purchase 2 axles from him. Both are out of a mid-80's 1-ton CUCV Army truck....LOW MILES, TOO!!! That means, Dana 60 front (KINGPIN) and a 14 bolt (10.5"/full float) rear with a Detroit locker and 4.56 gears. Now, I realize that the differential on the front axle is on the wrong (right) side, but no matter. The only problem I run into is this: Do I keep the axles and turn my '73 F-100 2WD into a full 4-link 4x4 stump-jumper or sell the front axles on EBAY and make a profit? FYI....both complete axles for $600. The wife is all for making a profit....but since I like building custom stuff and think since I've managed to leave the 2WD alone for 9 years, I want to build it up!!!

AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH WHAT TO DO!?!?!?

I feel that choice will be the most dominant consensus. The thing is, being that the 2WD is just that, the possibilities are endless as far as a drivetrain aft of the transfer case goes........ and it won't be a huge over-the-top truck like the moster truck (35's MAX) so breakage will be less of an issue with abuse. And it's not a daily driver anyways.

Maybe I could lift it really high....I do have the old 44" Ground Hawgs still laying around.....

How you can go from a truck with 49's to a truck with 35's is beyond me. I'm probably going with 42's on my "stump jumper" as you like to call it. If I were to get that good a deal on an axle I could use I'd hang on to it. If you sell it you might make $400. But then if you ever want one and can't find a screaming deal like that you're paying $1000 yourself. So why fight the inevitable?

It must be nice to be able to say something with 35's is small. My truck only has 33's and I could barely afford those.

EXACTLY. Now if I could only convince the other half that I need to hang onto these axles......

That thought crossed my mind. Although I couldn't use the front axle for a Ford replacement, I could use it in this 2WD and find a 203/205 right-output t-case and "take this burrito and ride!!!".

When I was growing up (yeah right ) and still in high school, I thought that lifted trucks and big tires were stupid. Then I saw the attention my brother garnered when he was doing that in school (I'm 3 years older) after I graduated. Once I was out of the Army and could afford it, my fate was sealed. I went from 33x12.5s to 35x12.5 to 35x14.5s to (BIG JUMP) 44x18.5s to 49x21s........it's a sickness I tell you. Get vaccinated while you still have time and you're still in the beginning stages. In no time you'll be spending every dime you make on BIGGER FRICKIN' TIRES!!

No doubt. My plans when I bought my truck was 6" lift and 35's. Now look what's happened. Just this morning I told my gf "I wish they made the Swamper in a 48. I'd sell these 44' and get those instead." She rolled her eyes and told me to leave it alone. Riiiigggght.

You can afford whatever you want to IF you want to bad enough. None of us are rolling in $$. We work hard and spend stupid.

All you'd need is a divorced GM 205. Those aren't too hard to find. It would really screw with people's heads.

Ha ha. Wanna know something funny? I can totally relate. That's my scenario.....even the g/f rolling eyes and telling me to leave it alone. Oh well, I bought a house where she can have her stupid horses and I can build a shop!

Yeah....Montana ranks last in wages/cost of living and Mastercard LOVES me!!! Those easy payments are AWESOME!!!! Truly though, if I don't have the money, I don't spend it. It's tax refund time and I think that I can buy what I want with the money that should've been in my pocket in the first place.

In the words of Michael Jordan when he was a spokesperson for Nike: "Just Do It"

I think Washington is the second highest minimum wage state in the country . . . and it's still not enough.

That's my deal now, I just need land with a shop. We bought this place over a year ago and my garage barely houses my tools. The 8 foot tall truck isn't getting in there.

Don't worry Georgia Boy, it's only a matter of time.

Yeah, I'm up to needing a 12'x10' garage door to get mine in. It's 10'3" at the tips of the stacks and 8'3" wide sidewall to sidewall. (I don't think I've ever seen an 11'x9' door...that would be too handy)

what if you pulled the tubes out of the centersection and swap them? that way the chunk would be on the drivers side. also you could turn your piunion angle. also you should be able to retain stock axleshafts since you aren't shortening/lengthening. i know it is a LOT of work and prolly wouldn't be worth the trouble but it IS an option.

-cutts-

EDIT.... i guess i am spoiled b/c I have taken over my dads motorhome garage that measures 15' wide 60' long and has 20' ceilings! talk about easy as pie to pull equipment in there and do all the necessary work without being in the weather elements
