I just ordered a new 4.0L Ranger 4x4 Supercab yesterday and am interested in performance mods available and results from these modifications. I will be doing a moderate amount of towing (3500lb boat whenever I can) so I;m interested in power and/or gas milage improvements. Any ideas?
If you want to gain power with a chip, then premium gas is required. However you will usually see a mileage increase to offset the higher price. If you do get a chip from Motorhaven, be sure to let them know when you order it that you plan to use 93 octane, otherwise it will be tuned to run on 91 since not all areas have 93, that way you can get the maximum power gains out of it. Also if you have an auto tranny, it will firm up shifts, and raise shift points under heavier throttle, which is better for peformance and towing.
I'll second the Gibson cat-back and a good cold air intake. Those along with a chip will free up some very noticeable power.
I'm on the lookout for a 4.0L Ranger (4wd) as a daily driver. How does the Gibson exhaust sound? Anybody have a sound clip or video clip?
I know on a 5.0L Mustang your not going to feel much of a gain at all with just a catback/chip/and especially a cold air intake...what makes it such a gain on the 4.0L?
Just one thing, Dont put a K&N air filter on a brand new truck like that. I was just in a class the other day where the instructor was the owner of an auto repair center. He said that K&N brings in alot of money for them, because the K&N doesnt filter as good, so it lets alot of dirt into your engine, and say for a supercharged car, he says you can always tell whether they're running K&N or not because the blades on the charger are all messed up due to the dirt that is let through, and also, the oil will go onto your MAF and give it a good coating, and pretty soon the oil will start burning and building up on it, and your truck will actually loose power. Just a fair warning. If i wanted that truck to last, i'd probably stick with a paper filter.
Warranty would not bother me at all...I don't deal with dealerships unless it is the only way around it...

Anybody got dyno gains for these?
The stock paper isn't a bad idea but I'm very familiar with the k&n air filters/air hog/mac/etc...aftermarket filters. That will be one thing I will buy (it will come with the FIPK)...
I just don't want an exhaust that sounds "ricer" like (bumblebee) or has a "no-muffler" type sound. Not because of the loudness but the flow characteristics sound cheap. I would like a nice even tone.
Any place got any sound clips or videos of somebodys?
Hmm, well, with my 94 4.0, everything magically fell off, so i decided to run true dual exhaust with glasspacks. Well, that was a bad idea, ricer city, so i went and bought some thrush turbo mufflers, i just kinda rigged it up so i could hear what it sounded like, and yep, still rice, so i rigged it up with both the turbo's and the glasspacks on, and bingo, sounds good, its not loud when its idling, but when you put it to the floor, it gives a nice even tone that remidns me of my grandpa's 04 Mach 1 exhaust sound. Otherwise i can tell you that a chip made a big difference on my 94 4.0, i guess i cant say why for sure it wouldnt make a big difference on an 5.0, but my guess is if you got a crappy chip that you could run regular 87, it wont make a big difference, but i know taht the Diablo that motorhaven sells made a big difference with the 94 octane tune.
On a stock or even mildly modified 5.0L or on most vehicles from what I understand don't get much power out of the aftermarket chips? So does anyone have any dyno numbers from any bolt-on to a 4.0L?
Yeah I'm trying to avoid any kind of ricy sound (I am anti-rice)...lol. Any sound clips of exhaust on a 4.0L or similar?
That is funny you mention your grandpa's 04 Mach 1 because I just helped a friend put on a offroad Bassani X pipe and Borla Stinger mufflers on a 04 Mach 1 last weekend. Sounds
Any single mod may not make a noticable difference...if they are all done at one you will notice it. If the guy with the mustang didn't feel a diffence with " JUST [my emphasis] a catback/chip/and especially a cold air intake", something was hooked up wrong, the car was tired to begin with, parts were not good, or something. Keep this in mind tho: the 5.0 hasn't been made in that car in about a decade. If you get a new or recent ranger, you are going to have much more computer involvement, and therefore much more potential for performance gains by tuning the computer.
