I run a single inlet/ dual outlet 40 series flowmaster with 3 1/2" tailpipes. It has a nice burble at idle and will definately roar when stood on. No ricer sound at all. Just a nice mellow tone when cruising and a roar when floored. I had mine installed at a local shop for $280.
Any single mod may not make a noticable difference...if they are all done at one you will notice it. If the guy with the mustang didn't feel a diffence with " JUST [my emphasis] a catback/chip/and especially a cold air intake", something was hooked up wrong, the car was tired to begin with, parts were not good, or something. Keep this in mind tho: the 5.0 hasn't been made in that car in about a decade. If you get a new or recent ranger, you are going to have much more computer involvement, and therefore much more potential for performance gains by tuning the computer.
A catback on a stock 5.0L will give 5-8rwhp maybe and the cold air intakes do nothing (some actually lost a horsepower or two like on many vehicles when actually dynoed - more for the "bling" factor than anything)...and a chip on a stock 5.0L or even the new 4.6L (mustangs) don't do anything to warrant even a few hundred dollars...just a few horsepower...
I'm very adverse to the 5.0L's...I'm a very avid member on stangnet.com and corral.net (a total of 6000 post between them) and a member of a few car clubs (all modified)...so I'm very aware of dynos/power mods/etc...
Anybody got a dyno or even just a SOTP review is good to me...:nice:
Hey, what are some good mods for a 5.0? I'm building one up for my F150, which operates on the speed density program. I want to convert it to mass air flow, say i do this, what has to be done when i put in a cam and larger fuel injectors? will i need an aftermarket MAF, or can i get a chip burned for it that will take care of these problems, because i dont think you can get chips burned for the speed density PCM's

I'm kind of in the same boat as you are as far as modifiing a F150 (friend has an 86 that he wants to do stuff to and I believe it is speed density as well).
I know on his 86 I don't believe he has any valve reliefs in his pistons so that limits the head and cam selection. The only ones that would be a better fit for his truck is TrickFlow Twisted Wedge heads because of their positioning of the valves in that actual chamber. I would convert to MAF for sure because it will learn your new cam and deal with it better than a speed density controlled vehicle would. You will need larger fuel injectors if you get a bigger intake/heads (24lb would be perfect IMO) even with a cam. They sell MAF conversion kits that come with a MAF/chip/and all for under $400 bucks I think...but I would hate to give you to specific of info on a truck based combo...because I'm not familiar with that...just the stangs...I wouldn't know would be good for you and what your goals are...
I have a 99 4.0 custom exhaust upgraded to a 2.5" diameter and Gibson muffler dumped before the rear tire. Night and day difference. Sounds much closer to a v8 than a v6 at all rpms but very, very tolerable on the hiway. My best friend is a chevy man but loves the way my Ranger sounds.
