radiator replacement?

got a 1992 XLT Ranger/3.0L/2wd/5 spd/ac/118k miles/original owner....
borrowed a cooling system pump from Autozone and found air bubbles coming from the interface of the plastic tank and crimped over metal tabs on the side tank located on the passenger side of the radiator. My question is, is this grounds for replacement, or can it be repaired. If replacement is the only option, what autoparts store will give the best bang for the buck. My local Autozone wants ~$195.00 for a new one...are they any good?

Also, will the lack of the radiator being able to hold proper pressure affect the performance of the engine. My perception is that it will since the water can never get up to proper temperature and thus PCM will not get a signal that all is well....is this about the way it is?

Thanks for the input

the headers are epoxied. sounds like the epoxy has lifted due to age. if you see any orange color along the seems thats the problem and cannot be repaired because from what the radiator shop told me, more times than not they wind up cracking the plastic. you need a replacement. Modine makes radiators with the headers welded in place and not glued so that would be your best bet. make sure the radiator comes with a lifetime warrenty.

Modine is OEM, and thus I always use them when I replace. Some parts suppliers have a meet the competition - 5% price policy; shop around and play the suppliers against one another. As for repair, um, yeah, there are a few shops around me that could repair that. My experience with repairs (all brass radiators) has been that they don't hold up/last as good as new and the repairs are a pretty good %age of the cost of new. I'm not willing to tolerate mediocre quality and reliability so I pay the extra $.

On your second item, unless it's really squirting coolant out the engine will get up to temperature. But with the pressure (about 15 psi) it'll be leaking coolant. I've also had the joint between the tank and the core unzip with no warning so I'd suggest replacing this very soon. Think reliability.

Are you having probs with the engine not getting up to temperature? Now will be a convenient time to address that.
