I have an 88 F150 4x4 302. My throttle cable is sticky. I tried getting some kind of lube down the cable but that didnt help but it didnt make anything worse. My last option is getting a brand new cable which is like 80 bucks from Ford. Anyone have any suggestions?
is the 1988 efi? the 89 is.
check at the end of the cable near the intake. there should be a large spring there if its the same as the 89. also check at the accel. pedal and make sure the cable is still secure back there. cables can stretch and lose effectiveness.
but move the throtle back and forth, to see if you can tell where its hanging, you may need to oil the throtle itself. they can get rusty and not move as easily as they should.
it has pictures of the throttle body. under the black cover (if its still there) is the linkage the cable attaches too. spray some WD-40 on the moving parts, and push the linkage back and forth by hand. does it feel like it moves freely or is it binding?
btw, autozone has the cable for about $35.00.
when you said the cable is sticky, what did you mean?
hope this helps.
a couple of weeks ago i sprayed some lube there and at the throttle body it moved fine, but at the pedal its self it still felt the same. by sticky i mean, some acceleration pedals are nice and smooth, mine doesnt feel like that at all.
there's no way to adjust the cable to remove the play. i tried to add shims and to bend the pedal to take out the play. that didn't work very well. so i got a new cable. easy to install, it just snaps into place.
