Getting a New SD,Comments on Engines

I am getting ready to buy me a 2005 350 SD 4X4 CC . I am currently driving a 2000 with a PSD. My question is should I stick with a PSD or go to a V-10. Drove a V-10 & it is sweet, but not sure about fuel mileage. I know the difference in price buys alot of gas. I drive an average of 25,000 miles a year & plan on keeping the truck for over 5 years. I tow an ATV , or boat every weekend . Nothing over 3500 lbs. Leaning back to a PSD ,but would like any comments good or bad on what engine to get. I know it is up to me in the long run ,but everyones got things that add up in helping me in my decision. THANKS in advance.

Here is an active thread on the subject. Pleanty of pro's and cons' for both. Like you, I do not tow anything that really requires it. I was not able to justify the extra expense for the PSD based upon fuel consumption, better resale, etc. In the end I selected the PSD because I wanted it and did not mind spending the extra money. I have been very happy with mine. You will read and hear about a number opf problems with the 6.0L PSD. Fortunately, I have not experienced any of thsee problems with mine and I suspect that a silent majority of us have not either. Both engines are nice. Sometimes it is OK to get what you want instead of what you need, especialy if you intend to keep the truck for a while.

At 25,000 miles you are at the point where a PSD starts paying for itself!! But either motor will be a good choice!! If I were to only put 15,000 miles a year or less I would go with the Gasser!!

I agree. With the mileage you put on the diesel would be the way to go in my opinion!

6.0 is big money, but V-10 doesn't get good milage, V-10 makes big power now and is strong, 6.0's have had a TON of problems, most guys that step out of the diesel are not happy, it's a way of life you know. You already know the service is big bucks on the diesel, and the pluging it in, gelling up. Maybe you are ready for a quiet ride that doesn't take alot of thought, just jump in and go. That 7.3 is strong and gets good milage, just buy a new truck and swap motors, it's the only way.....

You pay about $5000.00 more for a Diesel, don't buy it to save money on fuel the only time you save money on fuel is when you keep the truck for about 4-5 years.

I ordered my new 05 with the V10 and it is great for my situation. I heard Ford will be putting in a new diesel in the 07 trucks. If the new diesel is a big improvement over the existing PSD, I wouldn't want to spend 5K extra now when something much better may be on the way in short order. I love the V10 and if the new diesel is better I might trade up for one. Save the 5 grand now and spend it on something better in the near future.

You'll get most, if not all, of that $5000 back on the resale. PSD's hold their value way better than the V10's.

Well personally I've run gassers all my life. But since I got my new truck a 2005 F350 4X4 CC PSD Auto, I don't think I will ever go back to gas in one of my trucks again. I love the performance of this engine. It's pretty nice to run around town getting 15 mpg. Every other truck I've had that had near this kind of towing power only ever got 9-10 mpg and that was highway. When towing or hauling a load, even one of moderate size (3500 lb) its amazing how little this engine seems to have to work. Besides at the end of those 5 years it will still be going strong with a lot more life left in it, therefor having a strong resale value. Nothing against the V-10, my old mans got one I'm just a big fan of this 6.0 PSD

My work truck is a 02 F250 XL w/V10. With utility bed/tools, it gets 6-7 miles to the gallon in town. My 05 Lariat CC PSD has 850 miles, been averaging 15-16 mpg.
Hey, Bassnut, sent you a email about your wheels and tires.

If you plan on keeping the truck 5 years at 25K per year, 125K total then the MPG diff of the PSD would pay for the engine upgrade and then some.

GO Diesel! I didn't need a diesel but I wanted it so I got it and am very pleased. No troubles. Love the sound and the smell. And, I agree, the break even on the diesel is relatively short with your mileage.

I chose a V10 because I don't drive the miles per year that makes the PSD worth it. If you drive 25k miles or over per year, it's probably worth it.
