Hi Guys, new to the forum and Older Ford trucks. I bought a 73 F250 highboy not long ago and I was wondering if there are any #s I can look for to id the block? The reason I ask is when i bought the truck I was told it had 428 in it, the guy told me that when the engine was rebuilt in the late 90s that his engine builder told him it had 428 crank in it. The data plate for the truck says it came with a 360. Either way I won't be disappointed, the truck runs great and has plenty of power. It does have a factory 4 bbl manifold and carb and i noticed in my books it appears most if not all these trucks came with 2 bbls. Thanks
Secondly, here is what you need to do... Read up on the FAQ's listed at the beginning of this forum on how to do the "stroke test". Here's why. If your motor received a 428 crank, it will have the stroke of a 428. If the block was bored to 4.13, then you will have a 428. If the block was mearly overbored on the 360 base, which is more likely, then you have a 410. Unfortunately, the only way yo really determine what your displacement is would require pulling a head and checking the bore.
428 casting block casting numbers...
C6AE-A, 66-67
C6AE-B
C6AE-F, both 66 solid lifter blocks.
C6ME
C6ME-A, 66-70
C7ME
C7ME-A 67-70
C8ME
All of the above are listed 428 block casting numbers.
Some are duplicated on other blocks like C6ME-A is on a 352,360 and 390 block besides the 428. C6AE-B is also on some 427 blocks. So you can see where confusion can happen. If you happen to have one of the non duplicated numbers good chance it's a 428. But as Mike stated the only real way to be sure is to pull the head and measure. The stroke is easy enough to check and the 428 crank numbers are IU, IUB, IUA, A and B. I have a A 428 crank and it also has IUB on the 7th counterweight. Since it's a good runner leave it be till a rebuild is required. Then you can do a proper ID and such if your unable to ID by casting numbers. G.
Yep, measure the stroke. 3.98 = 428 crank, 3.784 = 390 crank, 3.5 = 360 crank. Then, to tell if it's a 410 or 428, measure the bore. Between 4.050" and 4.130" means overbored 360, 4.130 probably = 428. More than 4.130 = 428. 4.23 = 427 (not likely) I say probably because some 360 blocks will accept the 428 bore. If it has the 428 stroke, I'd just call it a 428 and find out the next rebuild. That intake is heavy. Run it and be happy.
