I have a 97 F`150 Automatic and noticed some leakage around the drive shaft seal on the transfer case. I noticed only because I heard some whining sounds coming from underneath, not good. My question is, is the transfer case fed from the tranny or does it have a separate fill plug and if so where is it? Also what does it take, Mercon or gear oil or??
I don't have a manual so am in the dark here
The drain and fill plugs are on the back of the transfer case, somewhat hidden by the crossmember. You'll need a 6" or so 3/8 extension and a ratchet for the fill plug and just the ratchet for the drain.
