Air Intake

I'm new to this site and have a couple of questions. I have a 2002 f250 7.3psd. I have a chip installed and 4 inch exhaust. Looking into changing my intake. I have heard alot about the AFE. Was wondering if it really is that good and if it is worth the money. If not what does work well.?

There are a lot to choose from. AFE is a bit more pricey than some. The Tymar intake is very popular here and can be had for half the price. Or you can do like I did and buy a Napa 6637 filter and make your own homemade tymar style intake.

Ditto on the Tymar

The Tymar works great for me,I"m not juiced up that much and spending a lot of money for some of the systems that you really don't need unless you have really added on a lot of HP to me is not necessary.Just my opnion.

I just added my version of the Tymar system on my 95' and I have to say its worth the time and money for sure. If your handy with tools and projects like this, its a breeze to do also. I like the idea of throwing away a paper filter element much better too, other than washing and cleaning the re-useable ones. I much rather let the filter get dirty and chunk that sucker and put new on...I wound up having to get a Wix filter#46637 for 37.99...
Our NAPA store said he would have had to ordered the 6637 and it would have taken more than a few days to get it. Also said it was 36 domething for it as well.

Should have my Edge EZ chip to stack on the six position flip switch tonight, hope to be able to weather the cold tommorrow to put that in and see if this all doesn't just get her cookin' LOL...

Moby,

I think I've seen you express the same opinion on another 'intake' thread. Why? I still have the stock box and am considering the Tymar. Please pass on your school of thought on this. Thank you in advance for when you get a chance to respond.

I dunno why Moby says it's a waste of money. It's a proven fact that if you let an engine breath better (more airflow in and out), you will get better performance. Every mechanic I know will agree, no matter what engine you're working on. Just my opinion.

I just put the Tymar setup on my '03 and it's worth every penny. The original kit price was $175, and replacement filters are around $20 from Dale at Tymar Performance. He is super helpful and just as excited about our trucks as anyone. I hardly listen to music anymore because the symphony of turbo, intake, wastegate, and full 4" exhaust is pretty darn good!

First the stock air box and intake tube will flow more air than the Stock 7.3 or the Stock 6.0 could ever pull!! Second if it could use more than the stock Plumbing before the turbo inlet you still have to deal with the Turbo inlet size it's only going to flow so much! After that you have to deal with the turbo flow! After that you still have to deal with the Intercooler piping!! Unless you are going Max preformance it's a waist of money!!

not really, the stock filter and box are quite restrctive, so taking out the whole box and replacing it with a big ol filter will help alot

Or if you are like me and had a leaking factory air box, then an aftermarket intake is definately a necessity.

I just put the Tymar setup on my 02. It fit perfect with no issues. I have the Diablo Predator on the 40 HP setting. Befor the tymar it blew A lot of black smoke, After the tymar there is very littly smoke. I would have to say it works.

Over 195,500 miles on mobey and I have never reset the filter replacement gauge!! 20,000 miles before cleaning the K&N filter!! If it was restrictive in any way it would have showed up by now!!

psdjeff: I'm sorry if I'm the only one not trying to sell you something. But they are useless, unless you are turning 4,500 RPMs and 50psi boost!! The stock box with a stock filter, installed correctly will work fine for many years!! The only reason I have a K&N filter only is because I drive 56,000 miles a year and I don't want to pay $15.00 bucks every 10 weeks for a new filter!!

I don't know about the 99 and up trucks but for the early PSD it is impossible to be sure that the stock box is not leaking. It is a terrible design. I'm not gonna argue about air flow but when it comes to filtration, the stock box won't cut it. I've seen way to many that leak! The tymar intake is SIMPLE, and very reliable. With it I have NO worrys about my engine suckin dirt. Peace of mind is worth the cost of the tymar alone.
