Hey fellas, I have torn into my brothers 92 ranger and have found a cracked head and a burned up piston, they are both #2 cylinder.
This is the second head too be on this engine, is this a common problem?
This is a 93 engine from the factory. The body is 92 but the under hood sticker is 93.
We are trying too figure out if we should drop another engine in this truck.
My question is what years of engines will bolt right in?
Thanks for any help.

Reason: spelling is not my good features.
I thought the 2.3L '92 only made something in the neighborhood of 105hp... I could be wrong... but if I'm not, I'd pick something else. I'm pretty sure you can pack just about anything under the hood of a Ranger. Well, with enough imagination I'm sure anything is possible... I'm pretty sure that whatever you can find for cheap will work just fine. I think that it was in '90 that they added some extra plugs to the 2.3s, so from 90-93 they're all pretty similar. I think.
I was hoping to replace my 2.5 with a 5.4 or something... this is of course after I have my truck paid off (maybe the end of this year) and have something else to drive. Or I might just turbo it... I've thought about that seriously for a few months now.
should drop a 5.something in it, I would like to drop a 5.0 in my 94, gotta make some more money, get another car to drive during the swap, and need to get some room to do it. aka when I get out of college, lol. You could swap back with the 4cyl, if you want a little more power try and find a 6. like the 3.0 or 4.0
Well, I was going too see how much power I could get out of one of these pups.
I have one guy that pulled a 2.3L out of a 92 mustange cause he's building a drag car, and another that is parting out a 95 ranger with a 2.3L
Just wondering what years will bolt right in without much effort.
Bottom line just trying too get the truck back on the road for now.
If I had the time, I would get a turbine motor and drop it under the hood.
a 3.8L or a 4.0 MIGHT bold right in there. i'm pretty sure if there was any fabrications to be made, they would be minor. if u move up to the 3.8 or 4.0, the bellhousings for the tranny prolly won't line up so if u get a new motor, make sure u get the tranny for it as well. find an older ranger or bronco II from a junkyard and take a 2.8/2.8 out of it w/ the tranny. ya could walk away w/ it for a couple hundred bucks. good little motors too.
Hey Bronco
When it comes to swapping things be sure to go over to a junk yard that has the parts cross reference books that will tell you what is bolt in and what will not. Check the archives in this forum and learn from the guys who have swapped in a mustang engine. They all seem to say that the mustangs are tuned differently and seem to have much less power in the truck. Even if it will bolt in.
Not too long ago I agonized over a blown 5 speed in my '87, have over 190k on it. I am glad that I took the advice of the guy who looked up the information on the cross reference manual at the junkyard. It saved me alot of expense and headaches.
Most of these old trucks are driven by younger guys who go off road ( on purpose or not) and tend to crash often. Which makes it easy on us older guys who wait for the truck carcasses at the junkyard.
Google search "1989 ranger 2.3" and you will see a wonder .pdf document in regards to Ford's 2.3l motor (and other 4 bangers)... it's the fourth search result labeled "4-cylinder engines" Looks as though it comes from the fordracingparts website ... hope this helps .... it looks like it will. I know my '89 Ranger came with the dual plug setup, as the article states. You should have seen the look on my face when the Monkey Ward tech. came out and told me my tune-up would cost extra because I needed 8 plugs. I said, "Ah, I don't have an eight cylinder?" Hey, I was a stupid kid of 19 ... what did I know?
I also see that in 1998 displacement went up to 2.5l "boosting" horsepower to 119 ... so that's a thought.
PS- The page also contains info on Small and Big-Block engines ... ahem ... in case your so inclined !!

shoot, get a good 2.3 from a thunderbird turbo coupe! (good luck finding one though, may have to rebuild it before you could use it, but the potential........)
