Hesitation to get into gear on Cold Startup

I have a 92 Ford Ranger 3.0 L V-6 automatic, and the problem is during the first 3 minutes of driving from cold, the engine takes too long (too high RPM) (or disengages for several seconds) to get to the next gear. After 5 minutes of driving, this problem doesnt occur. Going up hills from cold start just makes the problem worse. Any Ideas??

You might just want to change the fluid, and wait for it to warm up.
