My truck is a '68 F250 4x4 (according to the title), but the vin tag on the rear of the driver's door (and on the title) starts "F10YR..." I'm quite certain it isn't a 2wd F100, although the engine could easily be a 360 (I was told it' a 390), and for what it's worth, the truck grew up in San Diego.
All the trim, grill, etc... point to a 1968 or 1969. (Check out my gallery page.)
I have title and maintenace records back to 1980, and the vin was the same then.
I'm getting nervous. Any thoughts?
Not a big problem, most likely the door has been changed at some point, the proper vin went with the orginal door and this vin is from the donor truck. That is common with older vehicles, come across that fairly often. However if you are too nevous about it I will be glad to take off your hands. Seriously don`t worry about it, check your frame for the proper serial #. Don`t know the location of the vin on your year of truck but I am sure someone here will be able to give the location of it. Probably the wrong vin has been on this truck for a long time. That is only my thoughts. There maybe other reasons that I am not aware of. Good luck with your mystery.
I have a 67 F-100 4X4 and when I had the cab off of the frame, the VIN number was stamped on the top of the frame on the passenger side. Not sure if it is the same for yours, but worth a try. Good luck.
The vin for a 250 4X4 would start F26
The F10YR would make it a F100, with a FE engine built in San Jose.
They all have 390s in them on sale day but there were very few installed as most truck FEs were 352 & 360.
Maybe "nervous" was too strong a word. More "curious", I suppose.
I have begun scraping through the years of dirt and grime that seems to be caked over everything under the truck, looking for the axle tags, t-case and tranny tags, etc... I will see what I can see on the frame rail.
Coincidence or not, the driver's door doesn't fit very well, although it is painted to match perfectly, inside and out - no other colors on the inside either.
How do you tell the difference between the 360 and 390 (aside from pulling it apart and measuring the stroke)? I understand they share the same block, but have different "guts" - are there any markings on the heads or manifold that might clear things up?
Don`t know what the different # are but the onyl real difference is in the slightly longer stroke of the crank and possibly connecting rods. They have the same bore. There maybe casting numbers that are different from a 360 to a 390 but I doubt that. Don`t know how to tell them apart with out checking the crank. As for the door, it probably is from a different truck. It could also be out of adjustment but would bet on it being a repacement. You have a neat truck and that is all that would matter to me.
BTW, My 66 door & title start F25 but the truck is definitly a F100, so it is not that uncommon. North Carolina doesn't check things too closely. The go to vin is on the chassis. That number can be found on the top of the passenger side rail usually just ahead of where the axle crosses under. It can sometimes hard to dig out but it is there.
