i haven't done this myself but your right if you move the 300 towers back they will fit but you'll have to weld them to the frame instead of bolting them to the frame which i didnt like the idea of

As this was a stndard factory install, I would think 40 bucks and a trip to the local wrecking yard should get you a set of frame stands. My other unit is a 1978 F150 Ranger 302/C6/9inch. Works good for me!
actually, Ford never put the 302 in a 4x4 either...

You need to check with you local laws before considering an engine swap. a 2003 model year pickup would be very difficult to find aftermarket parts for. Federal law requires you to maintain a legal operating emissions system.
Going to be using the 300 mounts. Have cut the top flange off and will also be dropping down a tad. Will be welding addtional length to the front so as to use the front bolts as well and again weld a flange over the top.
Matts 72 is correct no 302 in a 4x4. My unit and one had before were both 2wd. Good luck on the fab up!! When they're done, could you photo and post?? Would like to see and admire the handiwork!!
