If it ain't broke.....change stuff till it is!

What works to find TDC, is take out the #1 plug and use a plastic pole to set down the plug hole. when u turn the crankshaft, wait till the plastic pole rises all the way up. then u know it's top dead center. thats how we do it in our high school auto shop.(but actually, we use screw drivers).

The piston goes to TDC twice in a 4-stroke engine.
When it expels all the exhaust gases and once when it compresses the mixture ready to burn for the power stroke.

Wiber neglected to mention it should be on the TDC just before the power stroke.
To determine power stroke on the Number 1 cylinder >the easiest way is to pull off the valve cover and watch the intake valve close> Just after that the piston arrives at TDC for ignition.
At this point the distributor rotor should be pointing at the #1 position.
To achieve this you lower the distributor with the thought in mind that the shaft will be turning into position as it engages the gear splines on the camshaft.

Or put your finger in #1 spark plug hole turn engine over with a wrench on crank pully bolt and turn in proper rotation and when you start to feel compressed air exiting cylinder then line up timing marks on pully to 0 then put in dist pointing to #1 on cap with advance facing the right way.

Do the above procedures. When you think you have it just right, but the dist lacks a little bit of seating all the way, you might have to take it out again, and turn the oil pump shaft down in the block with a socket on an extension just a little bit, and then try it again.
