I never pull a distributor and change teeth positions to get an FE timed. Just keep moving the wires on the cap.
I, on the other hand, had never considered that moving the wires one position does exactly the same thing until I mentioned it last night.
You will find, however, that some caps have the number 1 spark plug wire stamped in the cap. In this case it might cause confusion to move the wires. Also, if the wires are on the cap in the most efficient fashion, three of the 4 passenger bank cylinders, 1,4, and 2, are fed from the passenger side of the cap, and the same on the other side. This leaves only 1 wire per side that has to cross the cap to get back to it's side of the engine. It doesn't really matter except for appearance.
Hey guys, I got it running, but still not right. It wont hold an idle so i cant get the timing light on it. If I was 180 off, would it even run at all? It runs if i give it some gas, but thats about it. If my timing was way off, would it run so bad it wouldnt idle?

As for timing. With the engine running, just move the dizzy back and forth until the engine is smoothest. That is close enough until you can put a timing light on it. If your balancer is off, then this "ear" timing is all you are going to get. Often times it is more accurate than what the book says anyway.
If you are 180 out, the engine can run, but will shake, and jerk and rattle. You will DEFINATELY know something isn't right. Switched wires will cause a similar behaviour, but to a lesser extent.
When you give it gas does it run smooth? Did you rebuild the carb? Has the engine sat for a long time without running?
Got it running pretty good now. Did the rough time by hand, then timed it by light. I hear a couple little noises that dont sound normal. When you guys first start your rebuilds, do you hear things that quiet down after a while? This engine had the top rebuilt, thats it.
Also, I'm worried a bolt might be in the wrong place on the intake. The back bolts are short, then there is a odd bolt out of the next 4 on each side. It has a different head, all the others have heads with the deep grooves cut in them. Do you guys know where the odd bolt goes?
