Hello again,
I would like to start by thanking the forum for help w/my first two problems and now offer up a possibly silly question. I have replaced the clutch in my
66 352 and it sounds like the throwout bearing may be hitting the ears on the pressure plate when the truck is rolling in gear. I was surprised when re-installing the clutch fork that there was no attaching device other than the
return spring. Did I leave something off? What makes sure the fork does not
move around? Could the fulcrum in the bellhousing be worn out? It is riveted
in place and does not look like a replaceable part. Thanks for any advice and information! James Q
That fulcrum is replaceable. I probably sold a million of those in a kit form that had a new fulcrum and new screw and nuts. Very common for it to snap the rivets. Did you adjust the clutch properly to get a 1-1/2 inch free play? Is the clutch fork snapped onto that fulcrum? It's not supposed to have any up or down movement in the opening and should pivot on that bracket. I can't remember if your truck has the stamped steel fork or not. It should have a clip on the back side to lock it onto the fulcrum. THat was another problem with the 2 ears breaking off the fork. Sold plenty of forks in my time also. Take a look inside to make sure the T.O. bearing clips are onto the fork. Remove the return spring and pull the adjusting rod off the fork to check how it's pivoting. If it's flopping around , check that clip. It may have broken off.
Barry,
Thanks for the info. There is no clip on my fork! There is one small hole below where the fork rides on the fulcrum. I do have a stamped fork. Is this clip available?
Thanks again, James Q
I did a little more digging in my parts book. They show a wire clip that locks this fork on the bracket or fulcrum. THey call it a "anti rattle clip" It's made of wire stock and is hard steel. It's a squiggly shaped deal and goes into a hole top and bottom on the fork. If you hold the fork in the proper orientation, there's a hole on the top and one directly below it on the fork. If this clip isn't there, that may be your noise you here, "rattling" and sounding like the T.O.bearing hitting the fingers on the plate. Your local Ford dealer might have a few left over as they came in a package of 5 or 10 and once the pack is opened, it can't be returned to Ford. It's part number C6AZ 7562-A.
Call them up and see. Just give them the number I listed.
