66 clutch weekly question

Hello again,
This weeks' 66 352 clutch question pertains to the clip used to hold the clutch fork in place. Last week I didn't know it existed and this week I have two clips but can't figure out how they go on the fork. I can't find any diagrams that show the clips' placement. Also, can I do this without dropping the trans (for the third time)? I have gotten pretty good at dropping the trans, but would prefer not to again. Thanks as always for the help and suggestions!

As I recall that is the rough shape(middle being larger than shown). I did install once w/o pulling trans, but in a 2wd it is much easier to pull trans. Very difficult to get all clips into position at the same time. The slashes go into the fork and the ( part is what slips over a clip on the fork pivot. It must be installed in the fork first. The slashes go into holes top and bottom of the fork towards the bearing end of the fork.

Putt,
Thanks for the reply. I do not have a clip on the pivot. The pivot is "eared" and I thought the clip snapped around those ears. I am having difficulty getting the clip in the fork. I don't want to bend it to get it in the top and bottom holes, but this appears to be the only way to get it in the fork.
Thanks again, James Q

It does not snap onto the ears of the pivot as I recall. There was some sort of clip or tit that it snapped over on the flat part of the pivot. You have to tweak it some to get it into the holes of the fork.

The pivot is an L shaped bracket that is riveted(oe) into the bellhousing. Alot will be bolted in by this time in their lives.
blu- what kind of a problem are you having?

Hey Putt, I did a post back in May called clutch confusion, kind of lengthy. The main point to my problem is that the noise is intermittant, and to me sounds to be related to the t.o. bearing.I have had the tranny out more times than I care to remember and since the truck is driveable I have put off working on it. What confused me most was the fact that my clutch ford didn't have a "mechanical attachment. It seems to be held in place by the return spring tension. I just get the feeling something is missing on mine . Its been raing alot here, as soon as it dries up a little I'll crawl under and take some pictures.thanx

Hi Bluford,
I have put my truck back together so I can't take a picture. So far it works okay. I have had the intermittent t/o noise as well. If you will look back at my "clutch fork question" post, someone gave a part number for the fork clip. I found one at an old Ford dealer, but it is an obsolete #. The clip is available from many mail-order sources.
Good Luck, James Q

Glad to hear yours is working. Were you able to fix it without removing the tranny?

OK, I think I'm getting somewhere .I think something is missing on my fork. I found a drawing in one of the catalogs that suggest there are at least 3 parts to this "pivot".
1. an anti-rattle spring
2 a clip that atthaches to the fork via the spring ??
3 and the pivot ( some catolgs call it a trunnion?) that attaches to the bell housing.
looks like the slids on to the pivot and holds the fork in place ???? Man I hope this right , really getting confused.
Right now my fork is "free floating" in the opening; being held in place by the t.o. bearing and the return spring assembly.

blu- Yes that is the pivot that goes into the bellhousing, it appears to be for a newer style. If you don't have that piece or it is worn badly, that is the source of your problem. Note the flat tension spring it mentions. The '66 fork used a wire spring to hold the fork to the pivot. I'm sure that it could be made to work with the older fork.

Thanx Putt for the answer, I hope your not loosing patients with all these questions.I don't see how that spring on my fork could attach to that pivot. Is there more than one spring that goes on the back of the fork. or does our pivot look different?I found another picture on ebay that may help item # 7954852314, I realize its not for our truck but it shows a clip on the back is this the clip?

Patience??
Not a problem!! I have learned lots on these forums, so glad to help out!!

That fork clip would attach to the pivot in the earlier post. The oe pivot for the '66 was a solid metal piece without the "window" in it.

Do you have a wire spring on your fork that is vertical between the upper and lower parts of the fork? Sort of in between the channel formed by the metal. There is only one spring on the back of the fork. Look at post #2 for a rough view of the spring.

The '66 had the fork, the pivot(trunnion), and the anti-rattle clip(I'm calling it a spring). The clip is made from spring wire bent into the shape in post#2.

Look at Auto Krafters from the sponsors link. Go to -browse-clutch-release lever parts for F-series. At the bottom is a picture of the clutch release lever spring. That is what holds the fork in position on the pivot(trunnion). They do not show the pivots, tho.
