so the other day driving my 1995 f150 with m5od i went to shift into 2nd and it was really hard to do, made a bad grinding. Well later that day i went to shift into first and let the clutch out and nothing. Tried second gear and let clutch out and nothing. So to me that seams like the shift fork. Now i finally got my tranny out and opened it up. I cant tell if the shift fork is broke. Now the drain plug had some big peices of thin metal on them. So looking at the 3rd 4th fork its has the U shape with a somehwhat thin peice of metal that comes out of the middle of the fork. Now the 1st 2nd fork does not have that thin peice that come out of the middle of the fork. Is it broke or is it suppose to look like that? And if the fork isnt broke, what could the problem be???? and if it is how do i go about takeing that slider shaft out and getting a new fork on there???? any good places to get a shift fork??? thanks alot
I just changed out the forks in my 95 M5OD. Like you I was wondering just how worn they were. I was just going to change out the 1-2 fork as it had about 1/8" of metal left on the arc where the 3-4 was much thicker. My issue was that it ground going into second as well as going into third. First and 4th were OK.
I got the new fork for 1-2 and was blown away. The very ends of the fork on the new one each have a pad about 3/4" long on each side of the fork and this is the only area that should contact the gear mechanism. The center arc of the fork doesn't make contact at all. I looked at my 3-4th fork and the center arc was half way worn through. (Well past the pad area) I ended up changing them both and "NO MORE GRINDING!" I'm betting you wore the 1-2 right through and the 3-4 isn't far behind. I think I caught my 1-2 with only a couple of hundred shifts before it would have broken off. Also check out the plastic ball bushings on the shifter to cover as these wear out too.
I have a 91 M50D with bad shift forks but the local dealer tells me the part is discontinued. Drivetrain.com out of Vegas is only showing 96 Ford or later for shift fork replacement parts. Does anyone know a good replacement source for a 91 M50D shift fork? Thanks!
