Once I pass the probationary period in a few months I'll be a member of P.A.C.E. Our contract does end either this or next year and there is much talk about ending our participation in the union.
Boilermaker here, I work for Electric Boat out of Groton, CT making submarines. I'm not thrilled about my particular local, as they are pretty well in the companies pocket, but I have needed the union backing several times in the last year.
Not exactly blue-collar, more like pink-collar. HEU Hospital Employees Union, part of CUPE Canadian Union of Public Employees. I had a union agreed 15% pay-cut in 2004 and more than 50% of us are casual -- no vacation, no benefits, and the full & part timers live in fear of being laid-off any day. In 2004, my employer closed a dozen facilities and laid off 1,000+ employees. This week, a man who had waited 6 hours in the hallway of the largest hospital in our province, attended only by the ambulance attendents who brought him in, went into cardiac arrest and had to be airlifted to another city because there was no staff at the hospital to attend him. Public health care, yay.
Shop Steward in UAW at a Rockwell steel pressing plant for 5 years and have worked in both union and non union positions throughout my working career .

I come form a Union family. My dad is IBEW, mom & grandma are APWU, grandpa was a Teamster, uncle and cousin are IBEW. My dad has been unemployeed for almost a year because the jobs that are going on right now in his area are non union and he refues to work for a non union contracter. Seems like some brain washing going on there, unemployeed for a year OR work.
