What kind of mileage are you talking about? What type of driving, city or interstate? 16 - 18 is pretty common around town if your foots not too heavy and 22-24 for interstate if you stay below 75mph. I upped my mileage around town from 16 up to 18 by putting in a new set of Autolite 764 Double platinums, I just tripped 59,000 and the original plugs were still in there. I've also done the hot water bypass and 180 deg thermostat with the Air box mod but the plugs have made more difference that anything else I've done so far.

i have an 00 3.0 also, and i was getting around 12, i have the 19.5 gal tank, and 1/4 tank got me 40 miles...thats about 8 miles to the gallon, I have an appointment tomorrow, fuel filter, plugs, maybe wires, all that, I'll have to wait and talk to the mechanic, but I'll keep you posted

You can't calculate gas mileage accurately from just reading the gas gauge. IMO, Ford fuel gauges are very inaccurate. In my Ranger, a reading of 1/2 of a tank of gas used can translate into 6 to 8 actual gallons used. In a 19.5 gallon tank, 1/2 of a tank should equal approx. 9.5 to 10 gallons used. You need to fill the tank completely at the same station, using the same pump and then divide the miles driven by the gallons of gas that you put in. That 1/4 tank may be in reality only 2 or 2.5 gallons of gas that you've used.
That said, it's a truck, and the 3.0 isn't going to get great mileage, partcularly running around town. But if you are really getting 8 to 10 mpg, then you've got a problem.
i have never got over 17 in my 00 3.0 4x4.... it doesnt matter if i use super or cheap gas, or if i mash the pedel or drive conserv. my mileage will not change... i have given it a tune up and done everything and still cannot get 20... im very unhappy with this motor and i wish i had gotten the 4.0
You are right about not bein able to tell from the gas guage, but i went to the same pump at the same station, filled up, it came out to 9.7....so i think its still something to be concerned about...I am in the process of looking for a new truck, but in the mean time, probably go with the fuel filter and injector cleaner, would anything else help without goin on to big engine upgrades? maybe new air filter?
This is strange. My old 91 Ranger (which I no longer have) used to get great milage from the old 3.0 in it. On a full tank 72 litres (19 us Gallons) I'd get just over 800 Km on it or 500 miles / tank. So if my conversions are correct it's about 26 mpg US, or 33 mpg British. Pretty good numbers considering it was a 91 and a v-6. Wish I had that truck back right about now.
I currently have an 01 with the 3.0 in it, hopefully for only a week longer as I'm going to get a 05 F150 SuperCrew Lariat . Anyway gas mileage in that thing stinks. I'm only averaging 10-11 mpg on mainly hwy driving, and that's after new plugs and wires. The 3.0 historically doesn't get the best mileage. Service tech at my local stealership says for a few years they geared it for towing which killed the mpg. Kind of frustrating that all that guys I work with who drive Hemi Rams getter mpg than I do.
[B]I've got a 91 4x4 5.0 V8 F-150, 67,000 miles... I just replaced the fuel filter in it and i was getting better mileage, then all of a sudden the past three fill ups have been really really bad. Put it this way... I filled up on Tue almost all the way, today is Thur, i usually get around 125ish on 1/2 tank but all of a sudden it's at like 75-80 miles already PAST 1/2 a tank. Anyone have any suggestions on what else to replace other then fuel filter... maybe the PCV valve? Thanks!!
Maybe you should check again on the next tank STAR. If you don't let the pump cut off, you are taking a good 2-3 gallons off your initial start. My truck usually goes about 30 - 40 miles before the needle even gets back down to full (Once the pump cuts off, I put it up. Don't try to "top it off" past that), and I only have about 2000 miles on my truck (Ford says that the fuel economy won't peak until about 2 - 3 k miles)
I had a Flowmaster cat-back exhaust put on my 2005 3.0L Ranger extended cab on Friday. Saturday and Sunday I drove quite a bit, running two tanks of gas through the truck. So far, my mileage has gone up 2-3mpg, peaking at 22mpg. Power is about the same, sound is awesome. Plan on working on the intake next.
Kind of frustrating that all that guys I work with who drive Hemi Rams getter mpg than I do.
Agree. My Father-In-Law's 318 Dodge Longbed gets better mileage than I do. Time to get rid of the ranger. I've always been disappointed with this 3.slow.
I am in the same boat as a lot of you it seems. I have never calculated the actual milage I am getting, but I can say that - even for a truck - my mileage is poor at best. I have a '93 3.0L V6 Ranger extended cab.
When I first purchased my 2000 ext. cab 3.0 auto Ranger, I was getting 18.5 mpg on a good day. After some aftermarket mods, I now am getting 21.5 mpg pretty consistently. Most people said the mods would cause it to get worse mileage. My Ranger did the opposite! My mods are listed in my signature.
I think a good tuneup would help your problem with gas mileage.
