I definately do my homework when on Ebay. Check the feedback from previous customers. Try asking the sellar several questions before you bid. This is no guarantee but I've haven't been burned yet.
DANGER Will Robinson!!! Temporary thread hijack in progress!!!
onioncasserole - I know this might be too personal, but I gotta ask about the user name. Any story behind that?
Oh, and make sure you type "Ford Truck" somewhere in your reply so I don't get in trouble with Kenny for asking a non-truck-related question. He'll smack me if you don't. Ford Truck, Ford Truck, Ford Truck.
I've had well over 100 transactions all go well, only one bad one for a $7.00 information booklet on 9 inch rearends, which if I'd read the feedback first I would have never bid. Now I always read the feedback and check how long the person has been an ebayer. If very few feedbacks and new ID, but very pro looking ad, makes me think maybe they changed ID's to get away from something. Anyway, I've found ebay to be excellent for "upgrades", where when I take something off the truck I'm replacing with something newer/better/shinier chrome /more powerful, I just sell the old piece and put the moolah back into the new stuff. It offsets a lot of cost, plus I don't have a junkpile laying around. I've also found some very hard to find used parts for my F1, as there are no old boneyards around here to pick from.
I've bought and sold a few things on ebay and not had a problem so far
A few auctions have rung alarm bells usually for things that sound too good to be true (NOS Flathead V8 was one) these are often private auctions with unusual payment requirements or sellers in foreign countries advertising on ebay uk
I always ask if I can view the items in person before bidding even if I have no intention of doing so, if the seller comes back with a lame excuse I stay away. I also ask a few technical questions about the item, often the seller dosen't have a clue about the item he is advertising
If buying something expensive I go and collect it, a bit easier to do in the UK than the USA
My personal experience with ebay has been good but I have done some of the same things that Steve_B said, ask questions, if it seems to be to good to be true it most likely is.
My experience from the last several years in law enforcement was dealing mostly with computer / internet crimes of all sorts, the largest number of which were ebay fraud cases. We were lucky to be able to resolve about 50% of those. Madathlon's case sounds like it was well thought out in advance and with out the co-operation of many levels of law enforcement from local to the feebs no one would have the faintest chance of catching the guy.
The best defence is use common sense IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS." Use paypal when ever you can, they along with ebay are a great help in recovering your money in case of fraud.
I know I don't have any extra cash to toss around, I'm just starting my my 53 F-250 and it seems like everytime I set down and look at the list of want to do's, and need to do's they just keep getting longer and longer.
Anyway enough of this and back to the ford trucks ford truchk ford trucks
One thing to remember is that you can't retract feedback. You can respond to bad feedback, tho, but it still counts against you. I always try to wait til after the buyer posts his feedback on me, just in case. If buying, I post feedback ASAP.
I wish there was a place to give feedback on local stores and shops, wouldn't that change things?! Put a bunch of bad apples out of business pretty quick!
oh another tip.. ALWAYS get a tracking number... so you will be sure it was sent, and know if the slim chance of it getting loss... everyone provides one USPS, Fedex and UPS
I just got burned on e-bay, i seen a 53-55 cab for bid and it had the chrome trim around the top of the cab and inside as well, i emailed the seller to purchase just the chrome, he agreed and for 35.00 plus 10.00 shipping i recieved it 2 weeks later only to find it damaged because of a shotty packaging job. No email response from him yet.

If the package looks poor, don't accept it or open it in the presence of the carrier. File a claim with the carrier and save the packaging until it is settled.
I buy 3 or 4 items a week on ebay and have only been burned once.
If you're getting outbid at the last minute look into using sniping software such as hammersnipe or others that will bid for you at the last moment and you won't jack up the price by getting into a bidding war.
Being a Canadian means you have to always think about the exchange when bidding.
Some have been good deals, but i find my final price has usually been doubled. Having said that ebay gives us isolated folks the world at a click.
