First Things First
First upgrade should be gauges. Boost, pyro, and if you have an automatic, get a transmision temp gauge. With performance upgrades, you will need to monitor your turbo to keep it within safe boost levels (30 psi is probably max you want to ever go on a stock turbo). A pyrometer will help you watch your exhaust gas temps (EGT's), don't go over 1300 degrees for a long period of time or suffer eventual engine damage. With more power there is more stress on the transmission, so watch the temps there or you'll cook the fluid and dump a tranny.
Next, you need to build a foundation for more power. Intake will help your engine breath easier than it can with the stock airbox. A larger downpipe and exhaust will help on the other end to get rid of the exhaust faster and reduce backpressure. These upgrades alone won't give you much real power, but when you start adding other enhancers, the benefits go much much futher.
Now you can add a chip or programmer. Most chips are multi position and you can switch on the fly from one program to another. Many extreme programs are designed for race and not for everyday use. Keep it on a lower setting for normal daily driving, and switch to extreme for smoking up the neighborhood or showing off for friends. If you want a programmer instead of a chip, you get the benefit of a diagnostic code reader, but lose the ability to switch on the fly. Most programmers take a minute or more to switch modes, so see which one will work best for you.
Transmission upgrades would be a good investment if you have an automatic. Most chips and programmers will firm shifts "electronically", but the best way is to get a valve/spring kit. Most are easy to install, just a bit messy.
Those are the basics, after that the sky is the limit. Upgrading the turbo can include either a new turbine wheel (wicked wheel), or going with a high performance ball bearing turbo. Also new injectors can really wake your engine up. There are other mods that can be done such as CCV mod (crank case ventilation), 10K mod, EBPV delete, AIH delete, list goes on and on.
You can do a search for these if you have more questions. The only limit here is your pocketbook.
