I will be replacing my oil pan gasket tomorrow I went to take a look at the pan tonight and I noticed the paint was peeling off the pan and there was some pretty thick rust I felt for soft spots or holes but for the moment its alright.
The rust for the moment is not on the mounting flange where the bolts go but at the bottom and about 2" upward from there.
I feel uneasy about leaving it like this when I take the pan out tommorrow to replace the gasket should I sand it down and spray paint it with high temp engine paint???

Yes
I would definatley sand the pan with a very fine grit and spray it with a good heat resistant paint. If during sanding it appears that the rust is deeper than you think right now I would replace it.

Thanks I thought it was wiser to do that too I wish Ford baked on their finishes rather then paint them my 15 year old Toyotas pan doesn't have a hint of rust on it and not a flake of paint this pan looks like its shedding paint.
Ford seems to only care that it looks nice when you get it from them after that its your problem .
