Oil Pan Change ??

Is it possible to change the oil pan on a 351W truck while the engine is still in the truck? I saw the article about changing the gasket while the engine is still in the truck, but wasn't sure if it was possible to actually change the pan. I have a pinhole in the bottom of my pan (rust spot that is weeping) and want to change the pan, but really don't want to pull the motor out.

Thanks!!

yes you can, i just replaced the oil pump in my 92 f-250 with a 351W, you have to jack up the front of the motor, then drop the pan, you cant remove the pan till you remove the oil pump(Oil pump sticks down catchs the pan) then you can tip the pan down and remove it.

So you basically took the motor mounts loose, and jacked the motor up? What did you use, a cherry picker to lift the motor? Was it a complete PITA to pull the pan out that way or was it fairly easy? Sorry to ask so many questions, I am just debating on pulling the motor if this is going to be too much of a hassle.

Otherwise, thanks for the quick reply!!

i just did the oil pan on my 460 with a jack. it work fine used a 4x4 wood block between the jack and crankshaft. make sure u block the engine mounts with a piece of wood i used a 2x4 on each motor mount to be on the safe side before u start removing the oil pan. u also will need to remove the oil pump like the othe post said hand to do it on my 460 to. my engine was all torn apart had a camshaft go threw the timing cover so there was no other things i had to take off.

just becareful and if u can get someone to help u i did it myself took me 4-5 hours but i'm hurt have a bad leg i just had surgery. i wanna go outside and work one the truck but my parents wont left me

Have A Happy And Safe New Year

yup i did it on my 460 f250 4x4. i did it on christmas day a christmas i'll never forget. lol. wasent hard i could have done it in 2 hours if i wasent hurt. just make sure u disconntect the fan shrout, trans line if u have auto, power stering pump, radiator hoses top and bottom, exhaust, dispstick, battery ground cable. there mybe something else i forgot just double check before u start jacking. i already had the front of the engine apart so i did not have to disconnect anything just the exhaust and dipstick. she lifted up real easy.

just take your time and be safe

My oil pan is starting to rust underneath. It's not leaking yet, but I'm not relishing this job if it ever comes up.

I heard somebody used JB weld to fix his pinhole leak from the oil pan.

I did not have to remove anything. I just remove the motor mount nuts on both sides and "very slowly" jack it up using a 2 x 4 on the harmonic balancer.

Just must be that lil ole 460. That thing is a monster, so you probably need more clearance to clear everything.

My new pan is on the way, so I guess next weel I'll have a mess in my driveway when I do this thing.

Thanks for the info, I'll post back if I have any questions!!

I tip my hat to you guys I don't know how you got the pan out. I just did a pan gasket on a 92 f-250 5.8 ,auto, 4x4 took off fan shroud, trans lines and exhaust jacked motor off of dampner 2x4 under mounts and man was it tight I left the pan in and kinda fished the gasket around the job turn out good no leaks but I hope I never have to do this again..

Consult a good Ford shop about the one piece gasket. I ordered one when I put my new engine together and wasn't very happy with it. I went and consulted a couple shops and ended up at the Ford dealer. I talked to a very nice guy who turned me away from the one piece gasket for my application due to problems he had seen with them. He said they like to bunch up in places and cause big leaks. He had changed many under warranty for my application. I ended up getting the old standard and was glad I checked it out before it was in the truck.
