Question exhaust ?

Need new pipes on my 86 4x4 stepside, want to run them both out in front of the rear passenger tire, just under the step. Has anybody done this with dual exhausts? Another concern is will the exhaust fumes be sucked into the cab thorugh the rear sliding window while driving? Thanks in advance.

I did that with my 79 stepside, headers and straight pipes, exit under the passenger step. If you have women in your truck, you may want to put mufflers on, because thats all my wife complains about in that truck. She can't roll the window down because it's too loud. Some times when idling, if the wind is just right you will get some exhaust fumes through the passenger window, but nothing that will send you to the hospital......... unless you burn tons of oil. I don't think you need to worry about fumes while you are driving coming in through the back. I think the turbulence around the bed will blow it away. Only vehicle I had that problem with was a bronco, had no rear window, the flat back causes the air to rush up from under the truck and into the back window. The lack of a tailpipe didn't help the situation either. That cost me a $1200 visit to the hospital.

Before you do this check with the emmission laws in your area. I wanted to put side pipes on an old truck of mine and was told by the muffler place that they couldn't do that in CT on that truck. The law here is it must come out where the factory put it, before or after the rear axle that is.

Glad I live in Montana. No emissions, and you can run just about whatever exhaust however you want, whenever you want. YEEHAWW!!!

I wanted to do that with my flareside, but with keeping the cats for emissions/inspection I've picked up a flowmaster dual setup that comes out like that off of one muffler, but exits behind the rear tires. Havn't put it on yet though. I think it's for 87 up, but it looks like it will clear everything ok, may be a little tight around the spare tire though. Anyone try this setup before???

If it will fit the older trucks it should fit the older trucks, as everything underneath was practly the same.

As far as running the exhaust in front of the p-side tire you must be aware that the exhaust will stain the p-side back tire over time (just look at diseals and all the crap the exhaust leaves on the paint), but if you take car of it it won't matter much.

I myself went with a single 3" exhaust with an exhaust cutout, dynomax super turbo and it sdumps behind the p-side tire through a 4" tip, looks awesomes and sounds great .

As long as the gas tank is in the rear and not on the drivers side then you can run them where ever you want pending emissions laws. The common problem on most duals setups is the gas tank on the drivers side inside the frame rail. With the tank on the drivers side you would have to run both pipes over the rear axle and then in what ever direction you want.

That's the way this flowmaster setup is, it dosn't go over to the other side until after the axle, so it's close to my tire carrier. My gas tank is almost in the middle of the truck, it would work better for me if it spit before the axle.

I knew the frame is probably almost identical in 87 as it is to my 86. I really don't want it to block my spare though.
