I have a 1986 F-150 with a Ford 9" rear end. During the past year the oil seal began to leak, so just last week I went to replace it. The day before I go to replace it i notice the rear end starting to vibrate. I replaced it, filled it up with oil and vibrating stopped for maybe a day or two. Well when I was driving down the highway it started in again, so I got home and oil was poring from the rearend??? I took it apart again and the seal was torn. When apart I realize what why problem may be. The pinion shaft can be moved in and out 1/4". I am pretty sure this is not supposed to be doing this right??? I quess that made it start to woble around and destroy the oil seal. So i guess i may have burnt up the bearing on the pinion shaft? I am a pretty good mechanic but dont really know 100% about rear ends. And help is appreciated, is this a bearing problem or something worse? THANKS.
I would check the nut if it is tight, then a bearing has come apart and those pieces have gone into the other bearings, it would sound like you will have to rebuild the rear end, pay close attention to the ring and pinion gears to make sure there is no damage to the gears. When the race comes apart the needle bearing will fall out and down into the case.
If the nut has come loose you may get lucky and use a new seal and nut and retighten the nut to the proper setting and be okay.
Hope this helps.
David
I tried to re-tighten the nut, as tight as I could get and it and the pinion still moved in and out. I can see the bearing and it LOOKS fine, and not in pieces.
If you tightened it as much as you say, the crush sleeve should have compressed more causing the the pinion to be too tight. Because your pinion is still loose, there must be some bearing damage, maybe the inner bearing. I think you have a rebuild on your hands.
