So I just picked up a 97 F-150 with the 4.6L to serve daily driver and towing purposes. I'm just wondering what sort of issues are regular with this generation/year. I heard someone mention putting an oil cooler on the trans (auto trans) for towing... does it not come with one stock?
From the factory it has either the cooler in the rad or that and a small external cooler.
If you're going to do much towing a bigger cooler is always a good idea. How much are you going to be towing?
Do you have maintenance records for the truck? If not I would start by changing the transmission oil or having it flushed.
Any idea if the spark plugs have ever been replaced? Fuel filter?
Is it a 4x2 or 4x4?
