I have 3.0 gears on my 79, and its not the best for towing. I can keep speed once I get it, but acceleration is a bit lacking. I plan on regearing to 3.73's as soon as I can.

the 390 has lots of torque, but i would only tow around 4500 with those gears. get 3.50 or 3.70 gears and 6000 would not be hard. plan your stops ahead while towing.

How about the same engine and year in a F-250 with 3.54 gears?

I always take into consideration how long of a distance I need to tow something.... if it's not that long of a trip I'll move anything my truck will get moving.... but I have a 78' 4x4 w/ a gutless 351M. and like was previously stated plan ahead and pay attention... just truck down the road like u know what ur doin and noone will bother ya. Just for instance.... My dad once pulled a loaded tractor trailer 10 miles weighing 76,000 lbs(broken driveshaft). He had a snow plow on the front of the truck for added weight for the traction to get it moving... but the ole' girl got er done. lol

I have a owners manual for a 77 and it says the minimum axle required for towing would be 3.25 for the supercab. I know the 390 wasnt an option in 77 but the drive train was still the same.

I have used trucks with gears in the 2.73 to 3.25 gear range to tow with and have had no problems on short tows and keeping the GCVW under 7000 lbs.
